SAM Colquhoun has impressed the Power’s development coaches after an exceptional performance for Central District.

Named as the development team’s SANFL Player of the Week, Colquhoun accrued 25 disposals and a whopping 15 marks.

“Sammy had a very good night,” development coach Tyson Edwards told portadelaidefc.com.au.

“Westies refused to man him up when the Doggies had the ball and his work rate was excellent as a result.

“He kept running all night and used the ball really well.

“He had a really good game defensively too – so that was really pleasing.”

West Adelaide prevailed over Central, with Dom Cassisi taking his return from injury up a notch as he created opportunities through the middle and defended well, however teammate Robbie Gray struggled in his third game back from the ACL injury that sidelined him from much of last year.

“Dom was sharp and looked as though he was moving really well,” said Edwards.

“Robbie ended up with 12 possessions and 5 clearances playing forward and deep forward although he didn’t really find much of the footy in the first half, but in the second saw a little more action and got involved and worked a little bit harder.

“If he played the first half like he did the second he would’ve had a reasonable game.”

Port Adelaide’s SANFL team and Norwood went head-to-head in a clash of the traditional rivals at the Parade. Although the Magpies went down convincingly to the reigning league premiers, the Power’s players in both sides put in some quality performances.

At the Magpies, Danny Butcher and Justin Hoskin were particularly impressive, while Ben Newton and John Butcher had quieter games.

Development manager Daniel Healy was particularly impressed with Danny Butcher’s improvement.

“Danny only had 12 touches but it was his defensive stuff - like his application to stopping his opponent - that was most impressive,” Healy told portadelaidefc.com.au

“He’s fit in really well in the half-back line for the Magpies and hopefully he gets the role they’re playing him in every week from now on and build on his game.

“Justin (Hoskin) was probably the pick of the Magpies playing group though - he played and defended solidly considering the team had a big loss.”

Port Adelaide’s contributors for the Redlegs were exceptional, with Matt Thomas a narrow miss for the Player of the Week honour.

“Matty was the pick of the lot with his 30 touches, 4 tackles, 5 clearances and 2 goals,” said Healy.

“He persisted all game and was very tough around the ground on a very good night for him – it was great to watch.”

Darren Pfeiffer and Brent Renouf were also solid.

“Pfeiffer played mainly on a wing and had a solid night - he was really good early before dying out a bit in the second quarter and coming back into the game in the second half.”

“Renouf’s ruckwork was very good against the Magpies captain James Meiklejohn but we didn’t see the impact we would like from him around the ground, although he’s not quite fully fit yet so we’ll watch his progress with continued interest.”

Second-round draft picks Tom Clurey and Mason Shaw lined up on opposite sides when Glenelg played South Adelaide at Noarlunga.

After several weeks where both have worked hard to find their feet at their aligned clubs, the pair both put in solid performances down South.

“Tom played full-back for Glenelg on the Panthers’ resting ruckman and was defensively sound and Mason exploded in the third quarter with two goals on the back of some great presentation at contests and crashing the packs,” explained Healy.

“It was a really good game for him (Shaw) and he looked exactly like the player we drafted.”

In the league, Tom Logan put in another excellent performance for the Tigers and was one of their best ball-getters running off half-back, while Cam Hitchcock continued to work on his defensive pressure while playing forward.

Healy was very pleased with Logan’s performance, who if consistent along with the likes of Colquhoun, Thomas and Cassisi will put pressure on those currently playing in the Power team.

“Logan was just really solid defensively and in his kicking,” said Healy.

“He was one of our nominees for player of the week and really great to see him back to his old self.”

Jack Hombsch was again a solo starter amongst the club’s SANFL playing group when he lined up for Sturt against the Eagles.

Development coach Stuart Cochrane told portadelaidefc.com.au Hombsch continues to make progress as a tall back at the Double Blues.

“Hombschy played down back as a third tall defender on the Eagles’ Lee Staple and was again solid,” said Cochrane.

“He protected dangerous space and his defensive positioning was really good.

“He was also really strong in one-on-one contests.

“On the whole it was another good performance from him.”
