Trengove close to return
Jackson Trengove is firing and almost fit to return to football as Matthew Agius reports.
Trengove has been racing the clock to recover from a foot injury sustained in the Power’s come-from-behind win over West Coast in Round 5.
He has missed the club’s last seven matches but was originally forecast to have a 10-week rehabilitation.
His highly-anticipated comeback looks to be close with Trengove confirming to portadelaidefc.com.au he has returned to full running and match simulation training.
“It’ll be good to be off the long-term injury list and hopefully I’ll be back next week – I feel good,” said Trengove.
“I spent two and a half hours out running on Saturday and doing everything you do in a normal game.
“I pulled up really well and in the next couple of weeks I’ll definitely be back into it.”
It’s a comforting thought for Port supporters who also witnessed the return of other injured defenders Dom Cassisi and Jasper Pittard in the club’s 18-point victory against the Swans yesterday.
It’s been a tough seven games watching from the sidelines for Trengove, but he’s enjoyed the club’s last two wins, particularly against Sydney.
“When you get good wins like yesterday it makes recovery a bit easier,” he said.
“We had that rough patch where we lost five in a row and that makes it frustrating being on the sidelines.
“Us injured guys have been right behind the boys though and we help give some encouragement in the rooms before the game.
“Then they go out and do the job like they did yesterday – they were very solid and there wasn’t one person that let us down.”
Trengove is a chance to slot into Port’s line-up once fully fit and will provide a structural boost to the team’s defence and spine.
But he knows he will need to work hard to justify his selection with a number of young talents like Tom Jonas and Jack Hombsch stepping up in his absence.
“I just want to work hard to slot into a defensive six that’s doing a really good job at the moment,” he said.
“Tommy has been terrific and really stepped up over the last couple of weeks – playing on some big guys – and it’s going to be good to eventually go back with him.
“But we’ve also had Hombschy who’s come in and played a really good role over the last three weeks and been super again yesterday.”
