FOUR rookies have been selected by Port Adelaide in the 2014 NAB AFL Rookie Draft including former senior-listed ruckman Brent Renouf and Magarey Medal runner-up Sam Gray.

Port Adelaide committed to re-listing Renouf prior to the rookie draft and general manager of football Peter Rohde says it is a decision that will retain a quality ruckman who has battled injury throughout his time at the club.

"We wanted to keep Brent here and putting him on the rookie list helps us to both retain him and give him the opportunity to get his body right," Rohde told portadelaidefc.com.au.

"He had patella surgery at the end of the season and has now returned to training."

The club added its standout Magpies player from the 2013 season to the rookie list with pick 29.

Sam Gray won the club's SANFL best and fairest and finished second in the 2013 Magarey Medal count as a small midfielder.

He will remain in the Port Adelaide stable as an AFL-listed player having originally come to Alberton as part of its Eyre Peninsula Country Academy and playing through its underage program in the SANFL.

His league debut came in 2009 and he has since played 68 League games.

Port's national recruiting manager Geoff Parker told portadelaidefc.com.au Gray will add a versatile midfield option for the club.

"It's a really good result that we've kept one of our Magpies players in the tent," said Parker.

"But it's also a reward for his performance because Sam has been very impressive in the SANFL all year.

"He trained with us last pre-season and went away with some things to work on and we were pleased to see he did that all year."

Port recruited young Geelong Falcons defender Sam Russell with its first pick in the rookie draft.

Russell is regarded as a competetive small defender who has midfield experience with the Falcons.

He will add to the pool of small defenders the Power has obtained through this year's draft period, including national draft selections Jarman Impey and Darcy Byrne-Jones.

"Sam's another small defender who we can add to the group we brought in through the national draft," said Parker.

"We like his competetiveness, determination and ability to run the ball out of defence.

"He'll help us sure up that defensive area. Heading into the national draft Ken [Hinkley] was wanting more small options down back and we've managed to pick up a couple of blokes to fill that need now."

Parker formally drafted international rookie Daniel Flynn using its final pick in the rookie draft.

Port's young SANFL talent Luke Reynolds was selected by Carlton with its first pick in the rookie selections while Richmond picked former Power midfielder Matt Thomas with selection 42.
