As far as numbers go, however, this is one of the club’s most famous, having been worn by club champion Gavin Wanganeen after relinquishing the Power’s inaugural captaincy in 2001.
Coincidentally, Wanganeen wore the No. 4 at Essendon during his time at Windy Hill.
The ruckman said it was a rare privilege to wear the prestigious number and to follow in the footsteps of an indigenous trailblazer at Alberton.
"Gavin was a great player and a role model for many Aboriginal players in the game today - we all grew up watching him play," Ryder said.
"To wear the No. 4 here with the Power is really special, and it was great that Gav was happy for me to wear it."
The No. 4 was also worn by fellow Aboriginal forward Daniel Motlop during his time at Port Adelaide.
It was most recently worn by former ruckman Brent Renouf, and early-years players Matthew Bishop, Chris Naish and Ian Downsborough.
Ryder, 26, arrived at Alberton in mid-November and commenced his first pre-season with the club two weeks ago.
He’ll join his new teammates when the team flies out to Dubai for its annual pre-season training camp.
portadelaidefc.com.au will announce more new numbers on Friday and Saturday.
