MAGPIES players and coaches will be sporting buzz cuts later this week as they take on the World’s Greatest Shave in support of one of their own.
In a story of true mateship, 15 players, coaches and staff are shaving or dying their hair on Thursday to raise funds for blood cancer research.
It’s all in support of 21-year old Port Adelaide Academy player Kyran Dixon, who is bravely facing a significant off-field battle after being diagnosed with leukaemia in late 2014.
Fellow Magpies player Will Northeast is braving the shave, along with club including academy coach Mark Clayton, football manager Scott Peters, and players Louis Sharrad, Ben Sawford and Tom Corcoran.
In true Port Adelaide style, those dying their hair will be doing so in the club’s colours – black and white.
Dixon started his first round of chemotherapy just before Christmas and will complete his fourth and final round in March.
Those close to him have described his positive attitude and outlook while dealing with the news and treatment as inspirational.
Fellow Magpies player and close mate Northeast said he’s even been coming out to trainings to support the team.
“He’s always looking out for other people,” Northeast said.
He’s a teammate you want to have on your side, you do the right thing by your team and you get the job done.
“Unfortunately it couldn’t happen to a better bloke, but he’s definitely not going to give up at all.”
Dixon’s always battled it tough alongside his teammates on the footy field and the club is taking the fight off field and show its support for their teammate and the Leukaemia Foundation.
The boys will don the World’s Greatest Shave smock this Thursday, March 19 at the Port Club from 6-7pm.
Port Adelaide members, supporters and family are all invited to come along and get around the boys.
“The team is really close to the club, the foundation is close to our hearts and hopefully members and fans will come out and support us,” Northeast said.
You can support the fundraising team via their online donation page here to help them reach their fundraising goal of $2,000
