PORT Adelaide midfielder Hamish Hartlett has praised the Power’s tough performance after a 21-point win over Greater Western Sydney.
Hartlett was vital to that tough performance, laying a career-high 11 tackles.
“It was good that we could show a bit of fight this week, we just needed plenty of players to play tough footy and really hunt the ball and the opponent down,” Hartlett said speaking on ABC Grandstand after the game.
“The Giants are really good in the contested area of the game and in the second and third quarters they really proved that, it was great that the boys could fight back and win plenty of ball in that area as well.”
PLAYER VIEW: Hombsch, Gray, Wingard
In a positive turn-around from last week’s loss to the Western Bulldogs, Hartlett played a pivotal role in preventing a Giants comeback with 19 disposals and one goal.
Putting aside his own performance, Hartlett was quick to praise the efforts of Brendon Ah Chee and John Butcher after both played crucial roles in the win.
“Ah Chee’s come along in leaps and bounds over the last 18-24 months and he’s kept plugging away this year to present himself with some opportunities in the AFL,” he said.
“He has that big presence and he can take marks and kick goals which is really important.
INJURIES: Schulz, Shaw and Moore updates
Butcher was a late call up after fellow forward Jay Schulz didn’t make it through the warm up, kicking a crucial goal at the start of the final quarter to give Port some breathing room.
“I thought it was a great effort from John Butcher to come in very late notice and provide a contest for us.
“John is all about team; we love him around the footy club and loved that he could kick a goal tonight.”
TALKING POINTS: Power v Giants
With games against Hawthorn, Gold Coast and Fremantle remaining, Hartlett says the boys are up to the challenge and ready to finish the year on a good note.
“It's a tough finish to the season but we are a club that loves a challenge.
“We are going to approach them as if it's the start of a new season so we don't die wondering in those games, we are looking forward to them.”
