THE SANFL will have a rotations cap and new out-of-bounds rule in effect in the 2016 SANFL IGA League season.
These rules will be in effect from Round 1, with the league recently confirming a final cap of 60 rotations this year.
That's 30 fewer interchanges than will be allowed in the AFL this year.
In effect, a total of 69 changes can be made in games as three interchanges can be made at quarter breaks without penalty.
Magpies coach Chad Cornes says the low cap will put the onus of having fit teams.
"I can also see them slowing the game down a fair bit, [with] just that constant flow of movement for the boys to be able to sustain that pace for two hours with limited rotations," Cornes said.
"I think it could make the game a little bit ugly towards the end of the game and not much of a spectacle but we'll wait and see how it turns out."
But will be the out-of-bounds rule that is most contentious, with players to be penalised for kicks or handpasses that cross the boundary line without being touched by another player.
The rule was designed, according to the league's GM of football Adam Kelly, to reduce congestion at stoppages.
A stricter interpretation of holding-the-ball has also been introduced.
The Magpies take on Norwood at the Parade on Thursday night in SANFL Round 1.
Port Adelaide also hosts St Kilda in AFL Opening Round on Easter Sunday, March 27 at 2:50pm (ACDT).
