We got our resident biggest Port fan on the planet - membership manager Ben Demertzis) - to tell us what his favourite Showdown ever is.

THIS particular Showdown has always been one of my favourites and the more I think about it, probably my favourite.

We have a few very obvious Showdowns that spring to mind: the last Showdown at Footy Park, the first at the Oval, the first ever Showdown.

But Showdown 21 stands out to me at the moment because the circumstances on field are very similar to this weekend’s game.

The Crows are flying and we are out of contention, most people think we are no chance of getting close to them.

I was actually living overseas in 2006, so obviously couldn’t attend the game.

In Europe in the mid-2000s it was a challenge to watch AFL footy on TV, so I had to stream this game online and watch it on my laptop (from a campsite in Berlin at about 2am the morning). I wasn’t confident my internet connection was strong enough to stay connected, so I made sure my brother (who was at the game) would give me constant updates via SMS.

We didn’t get off to the best start – Adelaide were smashing us in the first quarter – and everything appeared to be going to the pre-game script.

I don’t remember an exact turning point, but after quarter time we fought back, were close at half time and in front at the final change - but not by much.

We finished off the last quarter stronger than them, and took out a famous win.

Chad Cornes was unbelievable, and I probably fell further in love with him as a footballer, and every German hearing the screaming and banging coming out of the little green tent in the pokey Berlin camp site definitely knew it.

This week I keep thinking about this game, as it reminds me of that spirit, toughness and never give in attitude we all know has made Port Adelaide great over 150 years.

We know that year Adelaide played finals, we didn’t.

But on that day, at that moment, I actually didn’t care.

I was just so proud of my football club and what we got done in very difficult circumstances, we know these games mean so much more to our people than the other games.

It could happen this weekend – and I will be there this time – I wouldn’t want to risk missing out on what could be another famous Showdown moment for our club.

Port Adelaide hosts the Adelaide Crows at the Adelaide Oval at 7.10pm on Saturday 20 August.
