A RAMPAGING opening quarter was all Port Adelaide needed to put the game out of reach of Brisbane at the Gabba on Saturday evening.

But its continued push to punish the Lions on the scoreboard was nevertheless impressive - running out 84-point winners in front of 13,000 at the Gabba.

Port stormed to a seven-goal lead in the early minutes of the first quarter with punishing work out of the middle, led by Chad Wingard and Brad Ebert. Their contested work around the ground was critical to Port's early advantage.

Wingard finished with 31 touches (12 contested) and seven clearances in his best performance for the year, playing the game entirely in the midfield.

Encouraging for Power fans would be the way their side continued to press its advantage in the next two quarters.

Though the Lions put up resistance in the midpart of the game, Port managed to outscore the home side in every quarter.

Even a dour final term wasn't enough to stop a strong-marking Charlie Dixon from booting his fourth goal for the night. He also had 16 score involvements - the most of any AFL player this season.

Robbie Gray and Jarman Impey each bagged four goals as well, while Jackson Trengove booted three.

The victory was Port's fourth from six games this year, and propels it into fifth on the ladder ahead of next week's home clash against the West Coast Eagles on Saturday 6 May at 4.05pm.
