CHAD CORNES says the Eagles deserve top spot after their strong performance at Alberton on Saturday while being left to lament his Magpies’ use of the ball following their 21-point defeat.
Cornes conceded the Eagles’ skill in moving the ball and hitting targets was key to their victory, but said Port’s skills were lacking by comparison.
“I thought they [the Eagles] were outstanding, obviously top of the table for a reason,” Cornes said.
“They used the ball really well and their run and fitness was brilliant they definitely out worked us.
“The boys can be flat after a week off, but I thought our skill level was poor too, we struggled to kick the drop punt which won’t get you far in a game of footy.”
The game started a seemingly even contest the Magpies were the first to score through Brett Eddy, but the Eagles held their positions and forced the Magpies into difficult spots inside 50.
“Early, when we had a little bit of control, I thought we had enough forward entries,” Cornes said.
A noticeable absence to the games was captain Steven Summerton, who under SANFL rules that prioritise AFL player selection over SANFL contracted players, was unable to be picked for the League team.
He played reserves on Saturday.
“You would love to play Summo,” Cornes said.
“He is the captain and he has been in really good form, if we could play him, we would, but they are the rules.
“It wasn’t a shock to anyone when we realised we had such a fit list.
“Summo took it really well, and went back to the ressies and played a really good game.”
Port Adelaide take on Central District at Alberton on Saturday the 27th of May at 2.10pm for the Indigenous round.
