EIGHT GOALS to his name was a nice way for Dougal Howard to finish his day out at Alberton on Sunday as a leading light in Port’s 128-point win over West Adelaide.
His superb performance came on the back on what is undeniably the Magpies’ best performance this SANFL season.
With 24 touches and 11 marks to his name as well, Howard was one of Port’s best on the day.
But there is no doubting either that his successful day in attack came off the hard work of Port’s midfield and defenders, something he was quick to point out in conversation with portadelaidefc.com.au.
“I was very happy with it [eight goals], I got looked after by the boys… Our mids, our backs, did an incredible job - full credit to them,” Howard said.
“[West] couldn’t get through us, our backs were unbelievable – Logan [Austin], Jarrod Lienert were awesome in the air and coming out the backline.
“It made easy for our forwards.”
Chad Cornes was equally thrilled with the performance, but noted it was a request from Ken Hinkley to see Howard switch forward that helped manufacture the eight majors.
“He could have easily kicked a couple more, but had the team-first mentality,” Cornes said post-game.
“There has been a bit of talk as to where we want him - back or forward? Kenny made the call this week he was going forward.
“Great call Kenny!”
