ROBBIE GRAY, Paddy Ryder and Tom Jonas are among 40 AFL players named in the All-Australian squad.

The Port trio was named on the basis of them being among the best players in the league - not by position - in-line with the selection format introduced by the AFL in 2007.

However, the eventual team will be selected on the back of players being superior in their positions.

The All-Australian selection panel is Gillon McLachlan (chairman), Kevin Bartlett, Luke Darcy, Andrew Dillon, Danny Frawley, Glen Jakovich, Chris Johnson, Cameron Ling, Matthew Richardson and Warren Tredrea, while the All-Australian selectors, along with Kevin Sheehan, also choose the winner of the NAB AFL Rising Star Award.

The final team of 22 will be announced on Wednesday 30 August in Melbourne.
