JACK TRENGOVE is enthusiastic about the opportunity to experience a preseason with a fresh mindset and no restrictions.
The 26-year-old former Demon signed with Port Adelaide as a delisted free agent last Friday.
Trengove – who missed the majority of the 2014 and 2015 AFL seasons due to a break and consequent issues with his navicular bone – said he was excited about the possibilities of what the future held.
“It’s been a bit of a whirlwind the past 24 hours,” Trengove told Sportsday SA on Friday afternoon.
“I couldn’t be more excited and bullish about what’s ahead because I’m finally going to get a chance to attack a preseason like I want to, and have no restrictions.”
The former no. 2 draft pick said it had been a frustrating few years with injury, but he was optimistic about the future after playing consistent football in the last two years.
“I haven’t missed a beat in the last two years, and I’ve played finals footy there [VFL] as well. [I played] about 23 games [a year] for the last two years.
“It gives me a hell of a lot of confidence in my own body because after missing two years, you certainly have your doubts…[you’re] unsure of whether your body can cope.”
The former Demons skipper – and youngest club captain in VFL/AFL history – said an open conversation with Port coach Ken Hinkley was crucial to the continuation of his career.
“Ken was just upfront and honest. He told me the situation and said the opportunity was there if I wanted it,” he said.
“The brief chats that I’ve had with Ken so far, have already instilled a lot of confidence in what’s possible.”
Trengove played 86 games and kicked 39 goals with Melbourne, and will link up with former teammate Jack Watts when the Power’s preseason begins on November 27.
