PORT ADELAIDE General Manager of Football Chris Davies says there is nothing to suggest Chad Wingard wants to leave the Power ahead of the trade period.
Wingard is contracted until the end of 2019 when he becomes a free agent.
The 25-year-old’s future has been the subject of speculation with reports that there are Victorian clubs interested in trading for him.
But Davies told NAB Trade Radio on Thursday that Wingard hadn’t indicated a desire to leave Alberton.
"Where contracts have got to in the AFL competition is that with a year to go, whether it's the player or the manager or the club in some instances, they look at what they can potentially get in a year's time and work back from there," he said.
"Unless Chad gets to a point where he's got an offer on the table that would suggest he wants to leave, we plan for him to stay in 2019.
"We're certainly not going to force Chad out.
“If he wants to stay at our footy club in 2019, he'll be here."
Wingard has played 147 games and booted 232 goals since his debut in 2012, including 21 games and 22 goals in 2018.
Davies said the future of the Best and Fairest winner and dual All-Australian came down to what he wanted to do and what offers he might receive.
"Fundamentally, Chad's got to have an offer that would suggest that he wants to go and right now, that's not the conversation that we're having,” Davies said.
“There’s no need for Chad to say anything other than if he wants to go, he can let us know that at an appropriate time, but otherwise we plan for him to be at the club in 2019.”
“He’s contracted for next year so if we were asking all of our (contracted) players to recommit for next year, it would be a lengthy process.
“Right now, there’s nothing to suggest that Chad Wingard wants to leave our footy club.”
Davies confirmed talks were already underway to trade Jared Polec to North Melbourne in a deal involving the Kangaroos’ first-round pick after the wingman indicated a desire to move to a third AFL club.
He also said the Power was interested in recruiting West Coast restricted free-agent Scott Lycett as back-up for ruckman Paddy Ryder.
"My understanding is he’s probably had a discussion with Ken (Hinkley) over the last little bit," Davies said.
"Before any club finalises a deal in these situations, you've obviously got to go through a process of medicals and so on."
