IT’S been less than 24 hours since being drafted to Port Adelaide and Xavier Duursma is already living and breathing a club mantra, promising a “never give up” game style.
Speaking with portadelaidefc.com.au just moments after receiving his Power guernsey, the 18-year old made immediate links between his own game and Port Adelaide values.
Think; ‘tough’, ‘winning’ and ‘never give up’.
“I’m rapt to be here at Port Adelaide - it’s amazing, I can’t wipe the smile off my face,” he told portadelaidefc.com.au.
“I think I am a really hard competitor and I never give up, something that suits Port Adelaide’s play style.
“I am a really tough defender, I love to win one on ones, and to get on the outside as well…winning both on the inside and outside, that’s what I like to do.”
Port Adelaide took the Victorian country product at Pick 18 in the 2018 National Draft, citing speed and endurance as the running defender/midfielder’s strengths.
Likened by Fox Footy presenter David King to Port’s Justin Westhoff, Duursma says he’s keen to learn the ropes from the 2018 John Cahill Medallist.
“He is probably one of my favourite players at Port Adelaide coming into this year,” Duursma said of the Hoff.
“I just love how he is so versatile and can play anywhere.”
Duursma’s also excited about the opportunity to play alongside vice-captain Ollie Wines, who he sees as a leader in winning the ball.
“Ollie wines would be one guy I could learn from immediately,” he said.
“He’s a great leader and a good ball winner so I’ll try and learn for him as much as I can.”
