Mayes waited 757 days between AFL games, having left Brisbane for his native South Australia as part of the Chad Wingard trade. After 101 games for the Lions and cracking into the Port Adelaide side in 2020, Mayes managed 11 games on the 2021 season and maintained his reputation as a composed presence across half back.
Initially in consideration to be drafted by Port Adelaide in the 2012 draft, he slipped to pick 8, with the Power opting to select Ollie Wines ahead of him. A consistently strong performer in the SANFL, Mayes managed two senior games in 2022 and was the un-used sub in Round 15.
