ROUND 19 of the SANFL season began on Friday night under lights, with Norwood defeating West Adelaide at home.
Two games featured on Saturday, with Glenelg getting the points in a high-scoring clash against Sturt, while the Eagles were defeated by Central District after a fortnight out of action as a result of the split round.
Sunday saw Port Adelaide Magpies lose at home to North Adelaide, while the Panthers had the bye.
All games were watched closely by development manager Daniel Healy and development coach Matthew Nicks. Their full report is below.
SANFL Player of the Week
Daniel Stewart (for Roosters vs Magpies)
Snowy kicked 8 goals and basically took the game by the scruff of the neck in the last quarter and parts of the third where he just took over - he was really strong overhead and was a real target for North Adelaide, which is something that the Magpies didn’t have. He was a stand-out and the real difference between the two sides and it was a really good effort from him playing predominantly as a key forward with an occasional stint or two in the ruck.
Daniel Motlop (for Roosters vs Magpies)
Mots was up and about and worked hard at times, but not quite as often as we’d like to see him do. He needs to keep working to eliminate the poor pieces of play and just focus on doing the right thing by his side.
Brett Ebert (for Magpies vs Roosters)
Ebo was quite good and had a number of opportunities - unfortunately he didn’t finish his good work in front of goal, finishing the day with 2 goals 6 behinds. If he’d kicked straight it might have been the difference between the two teams with Port beaten in the last quarter.
Andrew Moore (for Roosters reserves vs Magpies)
Moore got plenty of possessions and was really the general as far as the on-ball brigade goes. He worked hard in tight to win the contested possession. Unfortunately he’s going to have to have an operation which is likely to finish his season for the year.
Aaron Young (for Roosters reserves vs Magpies)
Youngie was solid across half-back. He probably didn’t get as much of the ball as we’d like to see him running to receive, but he was solid without being really spectacular.
Callum Hay (for Roosters reserves vs Magpies)
Callum played some pretty good football up forward, including kicking his first goal for about six years - he’s mostly played down back during his footballing life thus far. He got knocked out a couple of times - one off the ball, and one in a marking contest - so was a bit worse for wear after the game, but it was a reasonable performance from him as he continues to take a few steps forward.
Marlon Motlop (for Bloods reserves vs Redlegs)
Marls has unfortunately broken a finger in his hand and has undergone an operation to have that remedied. Before the injury occurred in the third quarter he’d been going okay - it was a disappointing way to end the season for him.
Daniel Webb (for Bloods vs Redlegs)
Webb was very good - it was definitely one of the better games we’ve seen from him. He really used his size and threw his bodyweight around, and played really well in the ruck against a quality opponent, as well as taking a couple of telling marks around the ground. He continues to learn and make progress.
Jason Davenport (for Bloods vs Redlegs)
Alongside Max Pettigrew, Dav was a little bit quiet compared to what we’re looking for him to deliver on a regular basis in the SANFL. Dav played half-back and was solid on his man but probably didn’t offer as much offensive run as we’re looking for from him.
Michael Pettigrew (for Bloods vs Redlegs)
Alongside Jason Davenport, Max was a little bit quiet compared to what we’re looking for him to deliver on a regular basis in the SANFL. Max played up forward and was a target but Norwood were simply too strong for Westies, and he wasn’t able to have a lot of influence on the game.
Jarrad Redden (for Eagles vs Bulldogs)
Reddo played a role both in the ruck as well as forward, finishing with 20 hit outs to go alongside his 10 possessions, 4 marks, and 1 goal 1. His return to form in 2011 after missing most of the season has been promising as he continues to show steady improvement and consolidate his spot in the Eagles line-up.
Matt Westhoff (for Bulldogs vs Eagles)
This was Matt’s first game back up in the seniors for some time, and he played up forward and went okay in his role without dominating. He had 10 possessions, and kicked 1 goal 1, with his goal a very important one coming at critical time late in game showing that he can handle the pressure of a big occasion.
