Travis Boak holds the mantle as the Port Adelaide player with the most Brownlow Medal votes.

TRAVIS BOAK holds the mantle as the Port Adelaide player with the most Brownlow Medal votes while a good mate is close to breaking the century mark.

Ahead of Sunday’s 2021 Brownlow Medal count, we thought we’d take a look at the club’s Brownlow Medal history.

While no Port Adelaide player has won the prestigious award, given to the competition’s fairest and most brilliant player, former captain Gavin Wanganeen does have one in his sock drawer dating back to 1993 when he was playing with Essendon.

Boak finished with 21 votes in last year’s count, the highest number of votes the midfielder has received in a season, equal with his tally in 2014.

It saw him place second overall – the club’s equal highest finish, a title shared with Josh Francou who was runner up to Brisbane’s Simon Black in 2002.

Brayden Lyle received the club’s first Brownlow votes 23 years ago.

Then vice-captain Lyle received three votes for his 35 disposals and goal in a 33-point loss to Essendon in Round 2, 1997.

Lyle had returned to his boyhood club Port Adelaide after initially being drafted by West Coast.

After five Brownlow votes in 26 games with the Eagles, he added another 15 votes in 90 games for the Power.

The Port Adelaide Football Club can boast a total of 1626 Brownlow votes. Chad Cornes holds the title of the player to receive the most votes in a season. His 22 in the club’s 2004 Premiership year saw him finish third behind West Coast’s Chris Judd (30 votes) and Adelaide’s Mark Ricciuto (23).

In 2017, Travis Boak became the first player to top 100 Brownlow votes for the club, but teammate and good friend Robbie Gray is closing in on the century mark, needing just four votes to reach the figure.

Ollie Wines is widely predicted to poll the most votes for Port Adelaide at Sunday night’s count in Perth. He is currently ranked fourth in the club’s overall votes, needing just nine votes to surpass the 80 Warren Tredrea received in his 255 games. Wines has played 182 games so far including all 24 in 2021.

Boak also holds the record of having led Port Adelaide’s yearly vote figure on six occasions, ahead of Francou.

Others to lead the votes in multiple years include Gavin Wanganeen, who led the Power’s count on three occasions, and twice leaders Shaun Burgoyne, former captain Warren Tredrea and current stars Robbie Gray and Ollie Wines.

Wines led the club’s count in 2017 and 2018 before Boak claimed the title in 2019 and 2020.

Wines is a narrow favourite to claim the Brownlow Medal, slightly ahead of Melbourne’s Clayton Oliver and Western Bulldog Marcus Bontempelli with the bookies.

He would become the club’s first Brownlow medallist and highest place getter.

While Boak joins Francou as the player with the highest finish on a Brownlow Medal leaderboard, Wanganeen came closest to winning, polling 21 votes to finish equal fourth - one vote behind a three-way tie for the winner involving Adelaide’s Mark Ricciuto, Collingwood’s Nathan Buckley and Sydney’s Adam Goodes.

Boak has polled three votes in 24 games, taking him clear of Robbie Gray and Tredrea who have each polled three votes in 16 games.
