The spirit of competition is alive and well at Alberton, with two Port Adelaide players in a heated training clash hailed by the club’s newest arrivals as a sign of competitiveness and hunger within the team.

Jay Schulz and Jackson Trengove swung punches at each other without connecting, after clashing in a marking contest. The pair - both in the Power’s leadership group - were separated by team-mates.

The clash came after Trengove spoiled Schulz in a competitive drill in hot Summer conditions.

Draftee Brendon Ah Chee, who was taken with Port Adelaide’s no.45 pick at the AFL National Draft, says the incident was a positive for the team.

“You come to an AFL club with 40-odd blokes that are really competitive and passionate about their sport,” Ah Chee said.

“That just shows how passionate and enthusiastic and committed and competitive they are to their game, so there’s nothing wrong with that.

“I like that. I think I’m a pretty competitive guy and that’s what I love about football. You know, you’ve got opponents and you’ve got to fight for your spots in the team so it’s all a challenge and I’m just really looking forward to it.”

Schulz and Trengove completed the session and left the training track laughing about their encounter.

“Afterwards everything’s fine with them so it’s not like they’re hating on each other or anything, they’re good mates,” said Ah Chee, a 17-year-old forward recruited from South Fremantle.

“It’s just a positive because it shows what I have to be, how competitive I have to be to get into an AFL side and fit in and get games.”

Nathan Blee - selected by Port Adelaide with pick no. 51 in the draft - agreed.

“It’s definitely good for the club,” said Blee, a 21-year-old defender who hailed from East Perth.

“It shows how passionate and competitive things are. Obviously they want success next year, so I think it’s good for the club.”
