JARRAD Redden is a big chance for a recall against Richmond this weekend after a standout performance for the Eagles in the SANFL.

Redden kicked five goals for Woodville-West Torrens against South Adelaide after operating successfully in a dual ruck/forward role.

Development coach Tyson Edwards observed both Redden and Nick Salter play for the Eagles and was impressed with both performances.

But Redden’s five goals got him the nod for the SANFL Player of the Week mantle.

“Big Reddo started forward, would have a quick run around in the ruck and then return forward,” Edwards explained to portadelaidefc.com.au

“He was really lively, marked balls and set up goals, eventually kicking five himself.

“He didn’t get a lot of it after half time so he probably had a lesser impact then but he was very good from what I saw otherwise.”

Salter played his first League game since returning through the reserves a fortnight ago following a long-term foot injury.

He worked in tandem with Redden to contribute four goals of his own.

“Salts started on the bench and came on to play Reddo’s deep forward role when Reddo was in the ruck,” said Edwards.

“He looked quite good up forward, led quite well and helped set up a couple of goals as well as getting four of his own.”

Port Adelaide’s SANFL side hosted Central District at Alberton Oval on Saturday in a disappointing performance in front of the home crowd.

Several players lined up for the Magpies, with Sam Colquhoun donning Bulldogs colours.

He was the most impressive of the lot.

“Sammy got 28 possessions in a really hard-running game,” development coach Stuart Cochrane told portadelaidefc.com.au.

“Most of his possessions were won through that hard running into space.

“His focus was on making an impact with his footy and he did that really well.

“His ball-use was really good and probably just three of his kicks went to fifty-fifty contests so his efficiency was really good.”

For Port Adelaide a number of players struggled amongst a poor team performance.

Brendon Ah Chee debuted for the Magpies, with Development Manager Daniel Healy telling portadelaidefc.com.au it was a reasonable first league game for the young West Australian.

“Brendon played on a wing and half forward most of the first half,” Healy said.

“He played on Sam Colquhoun which wasn’t a match up suited to him and then went on-ball in the second half and won the first two clearances, eventually finishing with 15 possessions and six tackles.

“On debut I’d have said it was a reasonable game.”

Aaron Young and Justin Hoskin had quiet games for the Magpies, while John Butcher continued to struggle up forward with poor delivery to suit his playing style.

But Healy also said Butcher needs to improve his aggression inside forward 50 and work to dominate the forward line more.

In the reserves both Jack Hombsch (as a guest from Sturt) and Ben Newton had strong team-oriented performances which drew praise from Healy.

“Newts has been learning to enjoy his footy a bit more and focus more on how he can contribute to the team – he did that this week and hopefully his really good game reflects the importance of having that attitude.”

“Hombschy also played really well defensively, his opponent hardly touched it and Jack’s physicality in the game seemed to annoy and put his opponent off his game which is a great result.”

North Adelaide overcame Norwood in a thrilling Friday night clash, with Andrew Moore and Matt Thomas impressive for their respective sides.

Healy said Moore looks ready for an AFL selection after an strong contested game.

“In a fairly low-possession game for everyone, he still had 23,” said Healy.

“He grabbed it at centre bounces, powered away and took the game on, it was really pleasing to see.

“Plenty of grunt in stoppages and he got the quick kicks and handballs – he’s looking ready to go.

“Matt’s numbers came out pretty good but it was nothing like the games he has played (previously).

“Some of his decision-making with the ball in hand was poor and he wasn’t as prominent around stoppages as in the past.”

Rookie-listed Darren Pfeiffer had another quiet game for the Redlegs, while Nathan Blee, although involved in the game, had the least impact he’s had during his otherwise good start to the SANFL season.

Tom Logan, Tom Clurey and Cameron Hitchcock all performed strongly for Glenelg in the SANFL with each winning over 20 possessions.

Clurey was particularly impressive after less than a month of League football – winning 21 touches, 11 marks and four rebounds.
