Rnd 3 SANFL wrap-up
Nick Lower has continued his great SANFL form, winning another Cibo Glenelg Player of the Week Award.
Lower was at his in-and-under best against the Panthers at Encounter Bay, racking up the touches in the Redlegs big win. The 21-year-old, who is accustomed to playing in defence, has added another string to his bow this year, rotating through the midfield on a regular basis and showing off his ability to win the hard ball.
The award is judged by Power development coaches, Darren Trevena and Stuart Cochrane, and is announced exclusively at PortAdelaideFC.com.au each week.
It was another busy weekend for our development coaches, with 18 Power players in the SANFL over the weekend. David Rodan, Tom Logan and Marlon Motlop were other top performers.
You can also see highlights of Daniel Stewart's impressive performance against the Magpies here. The full SANFL wrap is below.
Cibo Glenelg SANFL Player of the Week
Nick Lower (for Norwood v South @ Encounter Bay) – Nick had a very good game and his form continues to be excellent at SANFL level. He keeps working on his clearance work and his kicking efficiency, which we see improving each week. Had a lot of the ball – 13 kicks, 10 marks and 21 handballs plus a goal.
David Rodan (for Norwood v South @ Encounter Bay) – D-Rod started a bit slowly as you’d expect not knowing the players very well or the ground, but he worked his way into the game well and started to take them on a bit with some run and bounce. It was good to see him take the opposition on and create some play. Like Lower, had a lot of the ball, with 8 kicks, 4 marks, 19 handballs and a goal.
Danny Meyer (for Glenelg v Eagles @ Woodville) – Rebounded well from half back and spent some time forward, kicking a goal. As we’ve come to expect from Danny, he used the ball well.
Tom Logan (for Glenelg v Eagles @ Woodville) – Tommy was desperate and intense as usual finishing with 31 very hard fought possessions. A very typical in and under game for him and could have topped it off had he kicked straighter, finishing with 1.3.
Nick Salter (for Eagles v Glenelg @ Woodville) – Salts had a good day out kicking 6 goals and looking very dangerous inside 50. He also spent a bit of time on ball, finishing with 15 touches and 4 marks. A very impressive game.
Paul Stewart (for Eagles v Glenelg @ Woodville) – Another solid game against some good opponents in Grima, Kirkby and Duldig for Glenelg and Stewie gave them nothing all day. Also managed to run and link up well from half back. Had 21 good possessions, 9 marks and 5 tackles.
Matthew Broadbent (for Eagles v Glenelg @ Woodville) – Broady started a bit slowly, with a few turnovers in defence, but turned it around after the first quarter, racking up plenty of the ball, linking well and setting up a lot of the Eagles’ play. Finished with 25 possessions and an impressive 6 tackles.
Matt Lobbe (for Port v North @ Prospect) – Didn’t have a huge impact on the game with limited time on ground. Competed well at ruck contests but hopefully this week with some more time on ground he’ll be able to take some more marks up forward.
Marlon Motlop (for North v Port @ Prospect) – Another great performance playing on ball and half back. He ran hard and broke the lines, causing some real damage from defence. Has his older cousin Daniel’s fake going, and is starting to look very confident with the ball in his hands. 22 possessions, hardly wasting a touch.
Daniel Stewart (for North v Port @ Prospect) – Probably Stewie’s best game for the year. Looked very sharp in the forward line and when he was in the ruck, competing well and running very hard around the ground, getting to a lot of marking contests. Had some very damaging touches among his 18 possessions. Also had 9 marks and 1.3.
Jason Davenport (for West v Sturt @ Unley) – Wasn’t quite as busy as he has been, but still chased hard all day. Had 10 kicks, 4 marks and 2 handballs.
Hamish Hartlett (for West v Sturt @ Unley) – Hamish played half forward and a bit in defence. Played well early before he got moved to a forward pocket where the ball didn’t come to him much so he couldn’t be as damaging. Went back to defence in the last quarter and read the play well, linked up well and spoiled well at the contest. Used the ball brilliantly with 16 kicks and 8 handballs.
Toby Thurstans (for Sturt v West @ Unley) – Toby had a solid game in defence playing on Damian Cupido, one of West’s more dangerous players. Took a couple of intercept marks, used the ball well and moved forward in the last quarter to kick a goal.
Matthew Martin (for West reserves v Sturt reserves @ Unley) – Matty lined up at full back and played tight on his opponent and spoiled well. He just needs to keep working a bit harder so he can get back into the league team.
Jesse Laurie (for West reserves v Sturt reserves @ Unley) – Jesse played on a former Power player in Tom Richsbeith and negated him quite effectively, also picking up 9 possessions of his own in the last quarter. He ran and linked up well and he’s another who is improving each week.
Mitch Farmer (for Sturt reserves v West reserves @ Unley) – Mitch played a bit on the back flank and also on ball. It was a clear improvement on last week and he’s now improving each week. He started to win a bit more of his own ball and also used the ball efficiently. If he can play four quarters of that football, he’ll be pushing for a league spot. Finished with 12 kicks, 6 marks and 5 handballs.
Glenn Dawson (for Eagles reserves v Glenelg reserves @ Woodville) – Led up well and looked dangerous early, but tired a bit after half time. Still going for his hangers, which is good and just needs to keep working on the defensive side of his game. Kicked 2.2.
Jarrad Redden (for Eagles reserves v Glenelg reserves @ Woodville) – Won a majority of the hit-outs and is getting stronger at the ruck contests with every game he plays. As his fitness improves, so will his ability to get to more marking and ruck contests. Won 24 hitouts on the day.
