PORT ADELAIDE clashed with Woodville-West Torrens on Saturday afternoon, with the reigning premiers running out 26-point winners at Alberton Oval.
The Magpies led by five points at half-time before the visitors ran over the top in the wintery conditions, booting the next five goals of the game.
SANFL coach Matthew Lokan said while his side battled hard, ultimately the Eagles handled the wet conditions better on the day and the Magpies weren't able to put enough of a score on the board to threaten a win.
“At the end of the day, we kicked two or three goals in the second half, it's probably not going to be enough to win,” Lokan said.
“We weren't able to get our hands on the football and when we did we fumbled it or gave it back to them.
“They were much better than us in the conditions and that was the result in the end.”
Lachie Jones was terrific for the Magpies with 24 touches in the midfield in addition to three tackles and two marks, while Ethan Moore was also respectable with 23 disposals and a goal.
“I thought [Jones] was our best player. His speed and his power around the ball were really important whether it's in the back half or around the midfield,” Lokan said.
“I thought he was good for us, which is great, he's hard, he's tough.
“He's raw, he's young. He's got some areas he needs to work on. But I thought he was pretty good today.
“Unfortunately, Ethan had to miss out last week. He was an emergency and came back in this week and we know what we're going to get from Ethan.
“He's hard, he's tough, he puts his head over the footy and the conditions really suited him today.”
The Magpies remain in ninth on the SANFL ladder with its next game in a fortnight’s time against West Adelaide in Loxton for the Russell Ebert Tribute Match.
