THE captain and two experienced forwards headline the list of players in the mix for selection for Port Adelaide’s game against Geelong on Saturday.
While the club recorded a clean bill of health after the weekend’s win over North Melbourne and won’t be forced into any changes, skipper Tom Jonas will clear the AFL’s health and safety protocols later this week and is expected to be available to return to the side, after missing the trip to Hobart.
Another to clear the protocols and be available for selection is midfielder Trent Dumont, who had been in good form before being forced to miss the meeting with his former Kangaroo teammates.
Orazio Fantasia is also in the mix to face the Cats. The pacey forward was the unused medical substitute against the Kangaroos and has yet to feature at any level this season following knee surgery, but coach Ken Hinkley will be eager to see him get some minutes before the upcoming bye.
Another exciting forward option is Charlie Dixon who played his first game of the season following two ankle operations in the SANFL in Round 6 but didn’t play at the weekend as the state league paused for the representative game against the WAFL. On Saturday, Hinkley said ideally Dixon would have had another game at the lower level, but he could still opt to bring him into the AFL line-up for the trip to Kardinia Park.
With no SANFL game at the weekend, several players who are among the selection conversation did not have a chance to press their claims. Last week’s AFL emergencies Miles Bergman, Ollie Lord and Taj Schofield will again come into consideration while midfielders Sam Mayes and Jackson Mead are others to emerge following periods isolating under the health and safety protocols who could be in the selection mix.
Port Adelaide will on Thursday evening name its side to tackle Geelong.
The game at GMHBA Stadium gets underway at 1:45pm local time / 1:15pm ACST on Saturday.
