A SEVEN-GOAL first half from Nick Salter has not surprisingly won him the Cibo Glenelg SANFL Player of the Week Award for Round 17.

Salter was scintillating in the first half, turning everything that came near him to gold. He took strong marks overhead, lead up well and kicked a brilliant goal out of the air in a one man show up front for the Eagles. You can see Salter dominating for the Eagles on PTV here.

The award is judged by Power development coaches, Darren Trevena and Stuart Cochrane, and is announced exclusively at PortAdelaideFC.com.au each week.

Matt Thomas and Marlon Motlop returned from injury while Jonathon Giles was again good in the ruck for the Dogs. The full wrap is below.

Cibo Glenelg SANFL Player of the Week
Nick Salter (for Eagles v North @ Woodville)A huge day for Salts where he could do no wrong in the first half. At half time he had 7.2 out of the Eagles total score of 8.3. He was strong in the air, had some good lead-up marks and was by far the best player on the ground up until half time. He kicked 5 goals in one hot patch of about 10 or 15 minutes in the second term. In the second half he got a bit frustrated because the ball wasn’t coming to him and ended up moving to centre half forward in the fourth quarter where he had a bit more of it. A great display and he finished with 10 kicks, 7 marks, 2 handballs and 7.3. PTV: See Salts in action

Daniel Stewart (for North v Eagles @ Woodville)Stewie got promoted after some great form in the reserves and played centre half forward. He didn’t get the delivery he would have liked but he’ll demand more of the ball as he builds his confidence. His biggest goal is to carry his reserves’ form into the league side, because we know he’s capable of it.

Marlon Motlop (for North v Eagles @ Woodville)Marlon returned from injury and looked dangerous across half forward. He had 15 touches and a goal and showed a few tricks to get around the opposition. He ran hard but still needs to work on his fitness base having been out for a few weeks.

Matthew Westhoff (for Central v Glenelg @ the Bay)Matty didn’t have a great day, with just 4 kicks, 1 handball and 2 tackles. We’ll keep working with him to get involved in the game a bit more by setting different goals. We want to get him back and firing so he can help the Bulldogs in their finals charge. He’s frustrated with his form and he’s working very hard to turn it around.

Matt Thomas (for Norwood v South @ the Parade)Back from injury, Matty played half forward and in the midfield, picking up 17 touches and applying 3 tackles. He worked hard and was tough in the clinches trying to win clearances for the Redlegs. He brought others into the game with his handball skills and had a real impact at stoppages.

Mitch Farmer (for South v Norwood @ the Parade)Mitch played on ex-Sydney player Simon Phillips and held him to just one goal. He worked hard on him and probably won his position in the end. He’s starting to get back to the level he was at towards the end of 2008.

Peter Burgoyne (for Port v Sturt @ Unley)Peter ran hard all day in a side that got belted. He finished with 13 kicks, 6 handballs, 5 marks and 11 handball receives. He had a lot of pressure applied to him, especially at stoppages, and although the effort was there all day he probably didn’t have as much of an influence as he’d like.

Jackson Trengove (for Port v Sturt @ Unley)Jackson had a few marks taken against him but pleasingly didn’t concede a goal despite the heavy defeat. Finished with 4 kicks, 3 marks and 7 handballs. We’d just like to see him take a few more grabs himself, but certainly the intensity at the contest is there.

Glenn Dawson (for Eagles reserves v North reserves @ Woodville)The Cougar started at full forward and kicked a goal early before he was pushed down back to play on a taller opposition. He had a few marks taken on him but worked hard and battled all day to quell his opposition’s influence.

Mitch Banner (for Eagles reserves v North reserves @ Woodville)Mitch got dropped back to the twos but impressed by racking up a ton of the ball, finishing with 26 kicks, 9 handballs, 8 clearances as well as 6 tackles. He worked hard and applied good pressure through the midfield. He should be pushing to get back into the league team this week.

Jonathon Giles (for Central reserves v Glenelg reserves @ the Bay)Another very good game from Joffa. He dominated the ruck with 49 hitouts and was busy around the ground with 9 kicks, 12 handballs, 3 marks, 1 goal and 4 tackles. His work rate was impressive and if he keeps playing at that standard he’ll be back in the league side at some stage.

Wade Thompson (for North reserves v Eagles reserves @ Woodville)A good day for Wade with 6 kicks, 3 handballs, 3 marks, 4 tackles and 3.1. He applied good forward line pressure and showed some good pace. Another who’ll be in line for league selection.

Jordan Johns (for South reserves v Norwood reserves @ the Parade)Jordan played his last game for South for these holidays and he’s now returned to Broken Hill to continue with his schooling. He did some nice quality things that showed good maturity for a 17 year old. He had some nice runs, a nice crumb front and centre and showed some glimpses of what he’s capable of if he could have played regularly. He only played a half due to a corky but he’ll be back for another game or two in the next school holidays.
