PORT ADELAIDE has signed talented foursome Kate Surman, Jacqui Yorston, Britt Perry and Cheyenne Hammond from Gold Coast in exchange for picks 34 and 81 at the NAB AFLW Draft.
South Australians Perry and Hammond will return to their home state, while Surman and Yorston are moving to Port Adelaide for new opportunities.
Exciting midfielder Surman has played 26 matches since her debut in 2020 and finished in fifth place in the club’s best and fairest count in 2021.
Nicknamed ‘Spud’ since childhood, Surman’s on-field ability is anything but – she is able to find space effortlessly across the midfield and forward line.
Born and raised in Ballarat, the 30-year-old physiotherapist is a high-energy footballer, with her teammates describing her as ‘zippy’ and ‘a livewire’.
“On field, Kate has clean hands, a really high work-rate, and is particularly smart around goals,” Port Adelaide head coach Lauren Arnell said.
“We are really excited about how she will embed herself into our program at Port Adelaide. She is brilliant off-field too. She brings great energy and is good for a laugh.”
Yorston has recorded 19 games in the national league and was awarded an AFLW Rising Star nomination in round six of her debut year.
Drafted by Brisbane in 2018, the now 21-year-old played four matches for the Lions before making the switch to the Suns, ahead of the club’s entrance into the AFLW competition.
A serious ACL injury during the 2021 pre-season kept her from taking the field that year, but the resilient footballer recovered with gusto and played eight matches in 2022.
“As a player, Jacqui is a ball-winning inside midfielder who has the ability to use the ball really well,” Arnell said.
“She understands the game better than most 21-year-olds and she brings excellent on-field communication.
“She’s also been through her fair share in life and in footy. Jacqui is a very mature 21-year-old who will add depth to our inside midfield and is clever when she goes forward too.”
Perry is a crafty small forward with 18 AFLW matches under her belt, including four games for GWS in her debut season.
Previously representing South Australia in state cricket, Perry’s experience in the Women’s National Cricket League set her up for success in an AFLW environment.
The 28-year-old secondary school teacher brings good football knowledge, a level-head and the ability to execute well on-field.
Defender Hammond spent three seasons playing for Gold Coast and has already made the move back to her parents’ home in the southern suburbs of Adelaide.
The 23-year-old played soccer for Adelaide United in 2016 but made the switch to footy after being invited to a training session with friends.
Taking the change in her stride, the South Adelaide product was best on ground in the 2018 SANFLW grand final and went on to play 22 games for Gold Coast.
“Britt and Cheyenne are South Australian locals who really want to come home and we’re happy we can give them that opportunity,” Arnell said.
“Britt is a very good ball-user and has great footy smarts. She is a player who has plenty to offer our group.
“Cheyenne offers some outside speed and has performed well for the Suns and for South Adelaide, when she has been back in SA.
“We’re looking for top-quality people to join our club and both Britt and Cheyenne fit into this category for us.”
