SATURDAY’s SANFL game against Glenelg will be Port Adelaide’s last at Alberton Oval for 2022 after a decision was taken to relocate the club’s remaining two home games because of extensive construction work at the venue.
Work will soon begin to bring the Fos Williams Family Stand and interchange benches up to AFL standard ahead of the AFLW season.
The building works include new coaches’ boxes and media and broadcast facilities as well as upgrades of the player interchange and officials’ benches on the western side of the ground.
The two SANFL games being relocated are the Round 15 match against West Adelaide – to be played at Hisense Arena at Richmond on Friday 15th July – and the Round 16 clash with Central District, which will now be played at Maughan Thiem Kia Oval at Woodville on the night of Saturday 23 July.
Importantly, members with SANFL game access will have full entry rights to the games at Hisense Arena and Maughan Thiem Kia Oval.
“The decision to relocate our last two games away from Alberton was difficult but unavoidable if our facilities are to meet the AFL venue guidelines by late August, in time for the start of the AFLW season and of course our first home AFLW game,” said Port Adelaide chief executive officer Matthew Richardson.
“We thank the SANFL, and the West Adelaide and Woodville-West Torrens Football Clubs for working with us to find a solution.
“Although playing home games at venues other than Alberton Oval is not a perfect option, we believe foregoing two games now will be a small price to pay when we have an outstanding home ground for our AFLW and SANFL players moving forward.
“Saturday’s game against the Bays will be a great opportunity to take in one last SANFL game at Alberton Oval for 2022 before the venue takes on a new and fresh look as part of the wider precinct redevelopment.”
Work on the AFLW facility under the Fos Williams Family Stand is now complete and in use by the club’s women’s program while the new museum, Port Store and the bar and dining area as part of The Precinct social club redevelopment will be finished in the coming weeks.
The second stage of the Alberton Oval redevelopment featuring an upgrade and expansion of the high-performance facility will commence later this year.
Saturday’s game against Glenelg will get underway at 2:10pm. It will also be the first time The Precinct at Alberton will be open for meals, hot drinks and cold beverages but bookings are absolutely essential and can be made online.
