Glenelg defender Sarah Goodwin was selected as Port Adelaide’s second pick (seventh overall) in the NAB AFLW Draft on Wednesday.

The savvy contested ball-winner became a vital player at Glenelg in 2022 as an attacking defender, with the ability to also make an impact through the middle.

Goodwin was named in the All-Australian team following South Australia’s undefeated run at the under-18 national championships and in The Advertiser’s SANFLW team of the year.

Goodwin joins Hannah Ewings as one of seven picks to be chosen by Port Adelaide on Draft night, as it completes its inaugural AFLW squad.

Sarah has dynamic traits on the field – you’ll see plenty of speed from her, particularly coming out of the backline. She has the ability to play a little bit taller than she might look. She’s impacted at senior level this year for Glenelg and played an important role across the defensive line for the under-18 national championships side for South Australia. Sarah is a year 12 student from Sacred Heart and will fit into our culture really well. She’s a bit on the shyer side, which is what we expect from most of 18-year-olds that come into AFLW, but we can see her developing well in our system.

Smooth moving defender who is strong in her attack on the ball and direct with her disposal. Excellent contested ball winner averaging 19 disposals (nine contested), four tackles and 2.7 rebound 50s in the unbeaten South Australian team and rewarded with All-Australian U18 honours. Been an excellent performer for Glenelg for the past two seasons, this year averaging 22.2 disposals in nine games. Ranked fifth nationally with her endurance recording a 7min 31sec time in the 2km test.
