Ebert. Mead. Now Burgoyne. The family traditions continue at Port Adelaide - this time with Jase Burgoyne taking the father-son step to AFL ranks at Alberton.
And in line with the grand Obst dynasty of the 20th century at Port Adelaide, Jase Burgoyne becomes a third-generation player in senior company at Alberton.
The grandson of Port Adelaide SANFL player Peter senior, the son of 2004 AFL premiership hero Peter, and nephew of Shaun, Jase Burgoyne will make his AFL debut with Port Adelaide at Perth Stadium on Sunday evening against Fremantle.
Called to Port Adelaide - from the club's next generation academy as the fourth father-son recruit to national ranks at Alberton - with pick No. 60 at last year's AFL national draft, Burgoyne on Thursday morning was told by his uncle Shaun of his rise to the seniors.
Just two weeks short of his 19th birthday (July 15), the lightly built Burgoyne will work from half-back with the family traits of speed, precision ball skills and that quality of "natural" football talent to shine on the fast deck at Perth Stadium.
"We've had another great club moment this morning with Shaun telling Jase he was playing, followed by the family moment with Peter and Anne-Maree (mother) after," said Port Adelaide football chief Chris Davies.
"It is a really good story for the club - and for Jase. We are really pleased for him."
Burgoyne will wear guernsey number 36, after Peter wore 26 and 7 during his 240 AFL matches from 1997-2009 and Shaun wore 8 at Port Adelaide before converting to No. 9 (and 67) at Hawthorn.
Burgoyne was named in the extended AFL squad last week in the lead-up to the home clash with Gold Coast as a reward for his fast-rising progress in the SANFL.
"Jase has been fantastic (in the SANFL) - he always has been able to rise to the level, grade by grade," Davies said. "Whether it was under-18s, where he was getting the ball regularly; his progress in SANFL reserves and then the SANFL league side, Jase has been doing great work.
"Our expectations (after the draft) were based on a very good player coming to our club. He was slight (in his body frame); he still is slight but that will change with time.
"And we are confident Jase is now in a position to be in our AFL team. He still has some work to do on his body (65 kilograms), but we think he is going to get through fine.
"Jase will have a similar role he has played at SANFL level - half-back, pushing up the ground where he can. It is such a fantastic story for the Burgoyne family."
Burgoyne's older brother Trent was Port Adelaide's third AFL father-son pick - after Brett Ebert, son of Russell; and Jackson Mead, son of inaugural AFL club champion Darren - as a rookie from the 2019 AFL rookie draft. He was delisted at the end of last season.
