DANIEL Stewart has narrowly edged out fellow ruckman Matt Lobbe to win the Round 19 Cibo Glenelg SANFL Player of the Week Award.

Stewart played his third consecutive league game and was forced to play the lone ruckman after Jamie O’Hara picked up an injury for the Roosters. Relishing the opportunity, Stewart jumped in hard and won taps against Glenelg ruckman Trevor Cranston, who is rated as one of the best ruckmen in the SANFL.

The award is judged by Power development coaches, Darren Trevena and Stuart Cochrane, and is announced exclusively at PortAdelaideFC.com.au each week.

In all, there was 15 Power players running around in the SANFL on the weekend, all trying to catch the eye of the selectors ahead of Sunday’s all-important clash against Carlton at AAMI Stadium. The full wrap is below.

Cibo Glenelg SANFL Player of the Week
Daniel Stewart (for North v Sturt @ Prospect)Stweie was good, moving into the ruck after O’Hara went down. He showed some good signs against quality opposition in Trevor Cranston, winning a few taps and jumping in hard and although he tired a bit towards the end of the game, he still did a lot of good work. When he was playing forward he lead-up well and took some good pack marks, including one on the wing in front of the Roosters’ faithful. His defensive pressure and tackling was also a feature. Finished with 10 kicks, 2 handballs, 6 marks and 2 goals.

Wade Thompson (for North v Glenelg @ Prospect)Wade was back up in the league side after a few good weeks in the reserves. He had 9 possessions and 4 marks and also kicked a goal. He applied some good defensive pressure and ran with the ball at times, we’d just like to see that run and carry a bit more regularly. He’ll be looking to build on that performance.

Josh Carr (for Glenelg v North @ Prospect)Josh played half forward and a bit in the midfield. He worked hard for his possessions (8 kicks, 13 handballs) and also crumbed the packs well up forward. He used the ball well but didn’t have as much of an impact at stoppages.

Steven Salopek (for Glenelg v North @ Prospect)Sal played a team-first role, following James Allan to quell his influence at stoppages. He racked up 26 possesions and ran hard all day. He also had some gutsy efforts, running back with the flight and putting his head over the contested ball.

Danny Meyer (for Glenelg v North @ Prospect)Danny provided some good rebound from half back with 19 possessions and 10 handball receives. He was good defensively (5 tackles) and pushed forward for 5 inside 50s. He just needs to work on staying involved in the game for longer periods.

Matt Lobbe (for West v Port @ Richmond)Another big game from the big man, leading the ruck for West and battling hard against Batson for the Magpies. He ran hard around the ground, especially running forward to provide an option and had some good in and under clearances to follow up his ruck work. Finished with 11 kicks, 5 marks, 9 handballs, 6 tackles, 4 clearances and 21 hitouts.

Peter Burgoyne (for Port v West @ Richmond)Had plenty of the ball with 28 touches and ran hard to get 13 handball receives playing on the wing, half forward and on the ball. He worked to good positions through the midfield and was a link man for the Magpies. He backed himself to hit targets when he had the ball and also did some good work without the ball, finishing with 7 tackles.

Brett Ebert (for Port v West @ Richmond)Ebo played forward all day and took some nice contested marks. He had his work cut out for him as the Westies defenders dropped off in front of him to stop his run at the ball, quelling the influence he would have liked to have had. Played in the midfield a bit too finishing with 17 touches, 8 marks and 1.2.

Jackson Trengove (for Port v West @ Richmond)Jacko played on a few different opponents – tall and small – and was solid against them all. He had some gutsy efforts running back with the flight and it’s good to see his confidence to do that. Finished with 21 possessions, 11 marks and 7 tackles.

Nick Lower (for Norwood v Eagles @ the Parade)A solid game from Nick with 24 kicks and 7 tackles, but he was hindered a bit as the game went on with a corkie he carried into the game from last week He still chased and tackled well and had some good clearances at stoppages.

Mitch Banner (for Eagles v Norwood @ the Parade)Mitch got promoted back up to the league side and although he didn’t get a lot of the ball, he made the most of his 8 possessions, kicking 2.1. He needs to work on getting a bit more of his own ball.

Paul Stewart (for Eagles v Norwood @ the Parade)Good, solid game from Stewie in defence spoiling well and choosing the right times to leave his man and help out a teammate. He beat his opponent and provided a bit of rebound from half back with 12 possessions.

Jarrad Redden (for Eagles reserves v Norwood reserves @ the Parade)Back after a couple of weeks out with a virus and played a majority ruck, spending a bit of time up forward. He got his hands to a lot of taps, giving his midfield first use of the ball, but needed to do a bit more around the ground to top his game off He finished with 32 hitouts and 8 possessions.

Matthew Martin (for West reserves v Port reserves @ Richmond)Missed some easy chances (1.3), but provided a good target up forward taking some strong lead-up marks. Just needs to work on leading up the ground a bit more.

Jesse Laurie (for West reserves v Port reserves @ Richmond)Jesse worked hard all day playing in defence, running off his man at the right times. He finished with 10 kicks, 5 marks, 5 handballs and 3 tackles.
