PORT ADELAIDE forward Connor Rozee has been nominated for the Round 3 NAB AFL Rising Star award after his strong performance at the Gabba on Saturday evening.
Rozee, playing just his third AFL game, kicked a team-high five goals and had 21 disposals, including seven marks and two tackles against Brisbane.
The 19-year-old says he was proud to be nominated for the award but his priority is firmly fixed on team success.
“It’s nice to be recognised for a performance but it was only one game and there is a long season ahead,” Rozee said.
“It was a good night on a personal level but it wasn’t the result we were after.
“I’ve been lucky to learn from some really experienced guys around the club and everyone has been so supportive of me and the other new boys in the team.
“I was just hoping to play one AFL game leading into the season so to get three in a row and contribute to the team’s performance has been incredible.
“Now I just want to keep improving and learning and play my role for the side, and hopefully we can get back to winning.”
Rozee, pick five in last year’s draft, drew special recognition for his game against the Lions from Power assistant coach Brett Montgomery.
“I don’t think anyone was surprised. It’s been coming. We know the obvious talents,” Montgomery said.
“I think one thing he has done that he hasn’t had a lot of credit for is how super clean he has been when it’s either been wet or dewy.
“He’s probably looked at another level in that part of the game.
“Our players found it pretty tough up at the Gabba for ball-handling. He didn’t.
“He had a four-quarter performance this week that was off the charts.
“Quality of touch, timing - we’ve been pretty happy with his eight or nine-possession games to date, just for his involvements.
“He’s a really smart player who takes a lot of work to defend which can obviously create opportunity for others.”
Rozee now joins Bailey Scott (Round 1 - North Melbourne) and Charlie Constable (Round 2 - Geelong) in the running for the award.
The 2019 NAB AFL Rising Star winner will be awarded the Ron Evans Medal, along with $20,000 from NAB and with a dedicated private banker.
