PORT ADELAIDE has had a long history of All-Australian representation and could add another name to the national honour role when the AFL announces its 2022 Therabody All-Australian team on Wednesday night.
Midfielder Connor Rozee was named among the preliminary 44-man squad announced on Monday, and if selected in the final 22 would receive an All-Australian blazer for the first time.
Last year Brownlow Medallist Ollie Wines and Aliir Aliir were included in the final side while Karl Amon made the preliminary side but missed the final cut.
Port Adelaide legend Bob Quinn was named the captain of the inaugural All-Australian side in 1947, although AFL historians no longer recognise the selections made between 1947 and 1955.
Back then an All-Australian side of 18 was selected from all competitions affiliated with the Australian National Football Council by a panel of sportswriters as part of a concept by Sporting Life magazine.
Between 1953 and 1988 a separate All-Australian team was selected based on individual performances at the Australian Football Carnival, which pitted state against state.
In 1991 the concept was altered by the AFL to recognise the performances of players throughout the season.
Port Adelaide has had 27 players named All-Australian and a combined 45 All-Australian selections in those officially recognised records.
Adam Heuskes was the first player from Port Adelaide’s AFL side to be named an All-Australian back in the club’s inaugural AFL season in 1997.
Former skipper Warren Tredrea and recently retired star forward Robbie Gray each collected four All-Australian blazers, with Tredrea also chosen as vice-captain in the 2004 side that included premiership teammate Chad Cornes and premiership coach Mark Williams.
Port’s seven-time premiership backman John Abley was selected three times in the Carnival era, and sits among some of the greats of the game in that period - Jack Clarke (x4 Western Australia/East Fremantle), Ron Barassi (x3 Victoria/Melbourne), Graham Farmer (x 3 Western Australia/East Perth) and Ted Whitten (x3 Victoria/Footscray).
Travis Boak’s selection in 2020 (as vice-captain) was the third time he had received the honour, placing him alongside Abley and only behind Tredrea and Gray for total selections.
Rozee would cap an incredible first season in the midfield if named in the final 22-man team announced tonight online and on Fox Footy.
