PORT ADELAIDE holds picks 33 and 60 at the 2022 AFL National Draft after a strong trade period where talented players Junior Rioli and Jason Horne-Francis were brought to the club.

While the draft hand may not appear overly strong, there have been some impressive players claimed with those picks over the years.

In advance of the draft, portadelaidefc.com.au has taken a look at the club’s history with picks 33 and 60 as well as some of the best players to be taken with those selections.

Today we will check out pick 60.

Pick 60

Port Adelaide has used pick 60 in the NAB AFL National Draft twice in the past four years, including last season. Back in 2017 the club claimed defender Joel Garner with that selection. The Eastern Ranges product broke through for his AFL debut in Round 9 of the 2019 AFL season but despite being among the most consistent players for the club in the SANFL, managed just three more AFL games before being delisted at the end of 2021.

In 2021, pick 60 landed Port Adelaide another talented young defender in Jase Burgoyne. His recruitment was slightly different as he was a father-son, and might have been picked higher otherwise. Despite his slight frame, the smooth-moving Burgoyne showed composure, bravery and a developing skillset in the SANFL early in the season to earn an AFL debut in Round 16 this year. The now 19-year-old ended up playing the last eight games of the season to get Port supporters excited about what he could potentially be capable of with more time in the system.

In recent years, pick 60 has been used on players like Quinton Narkle (Geelong, 2016), and Jy Farrar (Gold Coast, 2019) but there have been other notable pick 60s who rate a mention.

One of the earliest was Derek Kickett – the 152-game WA Football Hall of Fame forward – who was picked up from Central District by North Melbourne. After 12 games with the Kangaroos, he went on to become a cult hero for Essendon and Sydney, finishing with 179 goals. In 1994 Hawthorn picked up a young defender by the name of Brad Scott, who was traded to Brisbane in 1997 and went on to play 168 AFL games and win two premierships with the Lions, playing alongside his brother Chris. Brad Scott is about to embark on a second coaching stint, this time at Essendon, after a previous period at North Melbourne.

Although Port Adelaide has previously only had two selections with pick 60, the pick has a notable history that includes the services of now-Essendon coach Brad Scott. Image: AFL Photos.

Sydney grabbed Adam Schneider with pick 60 in 2001 and he played 228 games during a solid AFL career for the Swans and St Kilda, which included the Swans’ victorious 2005 Grand Final. Andrew Eccles (pick 60 in 1996) was part of Adelaide’s 1998 premiership side, Melbourne got 103 AFL games out of 2005 pick 60 Clint Bartram before a knee injury ended his career and 2012 pick 60 Mark Hutchings was a premiership player for West Coast among his 120 AFL games.

It just goes to show, later picks can help unearth diamonds.
