NICK Salter could be the only player on the injury list come the season start if two players prove free of injury next week.

John Butcher, who played his first game back from hip surgery last weekend, is a chance to play in Round 1 despite a wrist injury.

Tests this afternoon showed a minor crack in his hand which will see him rested from duties with Port Adelaide’s SANFL side on Thursday night.

Dom Cassisi will be tested this week as his calf injury reaches the final stages of the rehabilitation process.

If cleared he will play SANFL.

Brett Ebert will play in the twilight trial game between Port Adelaide and Glenelg after recovering from a hamstring injury.

Robbie Gray completed a successful return to SANFL ranks with West Adelaide, playing a half at Richmond Oval on Saturday night.

Gray tweeted the following day: "Got through and pulled up well. Good to be back playing again!"

Director of coaching and strategy Alan Richardson said the opportunity to have all bar one player on the injury list for Round 1 is a positive result for the club.

“It doesn’t mean that every player is ready to play AFL footy,” Richardson told portadelaidefc.com.au.

“Robbie Gray, Brett Ebert, Dom Cassisi – you could mount really good cases they’d all be fit and available; with significant preparation minutes they’d all be in our best team.

“It’s a real positive though that they’re not going to be too far away (from playing AFL footy).”

Nick Salter has been given a six-eight week window to return to the playing field, something Richardson says is a significant step for his rehabilitation.

He was added to the long-term injury list with a crack in his foot.

“He’s had a frustrating time of it, but it’s pleasing to see him with the moonboot off and running again,” said Richardson.

“We’re looking forward to having him back - he was looking good earlier in the year and late last year with the European exhibition match.”
