PORT ADELAIDE co-captain Tom Jonas has praised the club for its vision in taking the AFL game to an international stage.

Jonas says everyone at Port Adelaide puts in an enormous amount of work to be able to play the fixture in Shanghai, a fact that isn’t underestimated by the playing group.

“From a club perspective, 40 weeks of the year, everyone at Port Adelaide puts in a huge amount of work, which means a lot to us,” Jonas said.

“From a sponsorship side, growing the game, and growing our supporter base.

“Thank you so much to those guys that do that great work. We do appreciate it.

“It was just great that we could cap it off with a strong win.”

The co-captain says the trip to China is a great opportunity for the players and coaching staff to get away and bond as a group.

“It’s been a great week,” Jonas said.

“From a player’s perspective, it’s a great opportunity to get away and spend time with each other.

“I feel like that shone out on the field today and hopefully we can carry that on.”

Jonas was very pleased with the Power’s attacking game-style in its 70-point victory over St Kilda at Adelaide Arena at Jiangwan Stadium.

“We were just really happy with a strong team performance on the back of what was a massive week for the club,” the 28-year-old said.

“It was our first opportunity to play in dry conditions for about five or six weeks.

“We really wanted to hit the corridor, get that overlap run, and kick a lot of goals.

“It’s probably the first time we’ve put 20 through the big sticks for a while.”

The key defender was particularly happy with Port’s young brigade against the Saints, but says every player could be proud of their performance.

“Riles (Riley Bonner) was pretty happy with himself, he gave himself a pat on the back,” Jonas joked.

“You see Buttsy (Zak Butters) crumbing them and kicked a few goals, Rose (Connor Rozee) was really strong as per, and the shift of Dougal Howard up forward was great for us.

“Everyone played their role - obviously there were some standouts but there wasn’t one bloke who couldn’t walk off the with his head held high tonight.”

Jonas was also pleased with Dan Houston’s efforts in an unfamiliar midfield role.

“We thought it would be a bit of an opportunity to change it up with Rock (Tom Rockliff) out,” he said.

“Dan’s strength is his outnumber and his ball-use, and sort of suits a midfielder.

“I think we can really use that in and around the ball, and he did that really well.”
