RELIABLE midfielder Will Snelling was Port Adelaide’s highest polling player at the 2018 Magarey Medal count on Wednesday night.

The Magarey Medal was won by Norwood’s Mitch Grigg on 26 votes, his second medal win in two years.

After each match, the three field umpires award 3, 2 and 1 votes to the players they regarded the best, second best and third best on ground respectively.

The votes are tallied at the end of the minor round to determine the year’s Magarey Medallist.

Snelling polled eight votes for the season to finish two votes clear of his next best ranked teammates Dom Barry, Steven Summerton and Jack Trengove who each received six.

Snelling was named best on ground in Port Adelaide’s Round 2 win over Glenelg at the Bay after being the leading possession getter with 31 disposals.

He also took four marks and had a game-high 15 tackles.

The AFL rookie-listed midfielder received one vote in the draw against Woodville-West Torrens in Round 3 after having 25 touches, five marks and eight tackles to go with his goal on a difficult day conditions-wise.

The former state Under-18 captain and 2015 SANFL premiership player with West Adelaide was the only Port Adelaide player to receive a vote in the big loss to South Adelaide in Round 16, picking up two after having 29 touches, six marks and nine tackles.

A week later against his former side he received another two votes after spearheading a comeback at Richmond Oval with three goals and 37 disposals.

Snelling, skipper Summerton and Power recruits Trengove and Barry were the only Magpies players to be given three votes as best on ground in any game in 2018.

Barry received three votes twice, in Rounds 10 against Central District and 11 against Sturt.
