SIX-time SANFL Premiership player Peter Obst has been posthumously elevated into the Port Adelaide Football Club Hall of Fame.

Obst’s induction was the first since 2019 and came at the club’s Hall of Fame and Season Launch event at Adelaide Oval on Wednesday night.

A high-marking and dynamic half-forward, Obst was named the club’s 1962 Best and Fairest and he contributed 171 SANFL games and 169 SANFL goals to the Obst family dynasty at Alberton. He also represented South Australia on four occasions.

Obst has previously been recognised as a member of the Australian record breaking six-in-a-row 1954-59 Premiership teams, and 1962, 63 and 65 Premiership sides, which have each been recognised as part of the Hall of Fame. The last of his six premierships came in 1963.

In his absence, his son Andrew Obst accepted the honour on Peter Obst’s behalf.

“To reflect back on 171 games and six premierships is a mighty effort and a real testament to those teams he was so proud to be involved with,” he said of his father.

“On behalf of the Obst family, we would love to congratulate dad on a fantastic career. He would be so very excited to hear he has been inducted into the Port Adelaide Football Club Hall of Fame.”

Obst played alongside his late brother and 1967 Magarey Medallist Trevor Obst for Port Adelaide, and was the son of club champion Ken Obst, who himself played in three premierships amongst his 165 games.

Peter Obst’s son Andrew won four premierships with Port Adelaide and his grand nephew is former Port Adelaide player Brad Ebert.

Obst’s elevation was announced by former teammate John Cahill, who described the forward as a courageous talent, skilled on both sides of his body, and someone who drove the club’s success.

“He was a very talented player but he was courageous as well. He was very skilful, and a player before his time,” Cahill said.

“He set high standards the whole time. He was opinionated and you wouldn’t dare not hit a hard ball because he’d let you know.

“I love the way he had an opinion, he wasn’t scared to say it, and normally it was a good opinion.”
