WARREN TREDREA has won two premierships with Port Adelaide and captained the club, he is a four-time best and fairest and All-Australian, and the club’s all-time leading goalkicker, but being inducted into the Port Adelaide Football Club Hall of Fame alongside some of the greats of the club is among his highest honours.
Tredrea was elevated into the Hall of Fame in 2018 with seven-time premiership defender Paul Northeast, 2004 premiership coach and four-time premiership player Mark Williams and legendary player, administrator and life member Bob Clayton.
For 40-year-old Tredrea, it was an unexpected honour.
“When you hear that they are starting these sorts of things you think ‘geez I’d love to get in there one day, provided my career is good enough’,” he told portadelaidefc.com.au.
“I remember seeing it back in the day when the Power first launched in the AFL competition and seeing all the Magpies legends that I had grown up idolising going in there, you know the likes of Hodges, Ginever, Abernethy, Motley – who is arguably the most decorated or certainly has won the most premierships – so to be inducted in with that group and share it with family and friends last year was fantastic.
“Knowing that I now get to go along and sit on the head table with those guys is a real privilege, and it is something I will clear the calendar for each year.”
For the first time in 2018, a premiership team was also inducted into the Hall of Fame with the record-breaking 1954 to 1959 teams that won six consecutive premierships the first to be inducted, in what will become an annual tradition.
Tredrea said that was long overdue, praising the selection committee for now including premiership teams in the inductees.
“I know the committee sometimes has to split hairs as to who gets the nod,” he said.
“I like that they took the initiative in inducting the six-in-a-row team, which let’s face it, it’s just laughable that a team can win six premierships in a row, and that’s not in a disrespectful way, but I just know how hard it is to win one so for a team to dominate the South Australian football landscape like that team did in the 50s is quite incredible.
“Nobody should ever sit back and think those guys haven’t had a huge contribution to what is a great football club in Port Adelaide.
“I’m now just looking forward to sitting back with a few drinks and celebrating the next group who are inducted.”
2018 was the first time the events were combined, providing a unique opportunity to kick-start a blockbuster season where members and supporters can brush arms with current and former Port Adelaide champions.
“The night has got a relevance which connects the club’s past and its history to the current crop of players,” Tredrea said of the combined event.
“It’s one of the club’s biggest nights on the yearly calendar where you are launching the season, recognising the past and recognising people who have made huge contributions.
“It’s a celebration night and it’s not often you’re celebrating the start of the season.
“But in a way you’re celebrating not just the launch of the season but the wonderful contributions of so many to our club.”
