PORT ADELAIDE caretaker coach Matthew Primus admits wins like the one against Hawthorn on Saturday afternoon will enhances his chances of being appointed the club’s next senior coach, but denies that on-field results alone will be enough to determine his fate.

Primus is considered the frontrunner in the race to replace premiership coach Mark Williams after presenting himself well and notching up two wins against finals aspirants Adelaide and the Hawks since assuming the role three weeks ago.

A decision on the club’s next senior coach isn’t likely to be made until grand final week and Primus said he would have to go through the same process as all the other applicants.

“To take the opportunity was great and wins help, but it’s going to be a huge process,” he said.

“The wins and losses that I have over the next month will be a little bit of it, but the process of what kind of person you are will stand for a lot more.

“I’m learning all the time. I’m learning about preparation and learning about game day. The moment you start to relax and feel more confident something will come and bite you on the backside, so we’ll keep knuckling down and see if we can get another win next week.”

Primus challenged his players to back up last week’s showdown win over Adelaide with an equally good performance against the Hawks - and respond they did.

The Power trailed by 18 points early in the third term, but fought back to snatch the lead late in the last quarter, with a goal to young forward Daniel Stewart in the dying minutes sealing an eight-point win.

The home side was carrying several sore players, including Paul Stewart (hamstring tightness), Danyle Pearce (jaw) and Nick Salter (calf) and Primus said he was pleased the team was able to finish the game full of running.

“It was just a great effort. We were headed a few times, but we were able to get in front. I thought that every challenge Hawthorn threw at us we were able to stand up to it,” Primus said.

“The real pleasing thing was that Broges was the only guy over 27 and we had five or six 18-, 19- and 20-year-olds. We plucked guys from the [SANFL] twos and the SANFL and everyone came in and performed their role for the team.”

Primus also praised the efforts of tall forwards Jay Schulz (four goals), Daniel Stewart (two goals) and Justin Westhoff (one goal), who helped the Power haul in 20 marks inside their attacking 50.

“You don’t see too many contested marks in the game any more, so those guys were very good today and last week they were outstanding too,” he said.

“Schulzy stood up and Daniel Stewart is still making his way, but showed some really good things. Justin Westhoff’s last two weeks have been great as a forward and we’ve also used him in other roles, which has been important.”
