Pre-season SANFL wrap-up
DEVELOPMENT Coaches Darren Trevena and Garry Hocking have been busy over the past three weeks, following 20 Power players in SANFL trial games around Adelaide
PortAdelaideFC.com.au sat down with the pair to find out how the SANFL guys have been progressing…
Daniel Bass (1 league - South) - Bassy played in the ruck for one game and showed some promising signs. As he continues to improve he’ll play a key role in South’s ruck division this year. He missed two trial games after picking up a minor injury in an internal trial.
Jordan Johns (1 league/2 reserves - South) - He’s adapting to the bigger bodies in the SANFL and the faster pace. He progressed nicely in the midfield and finished the pre-season with a 22 possession game in South’s reserves.
Jay Nash (2 league - Central) - Fitted nicely back in to his original SANFL club across half back. He uses the ball well and looks to be an established player at SANFL level. He’ll be putting pressure on AFL players regularly and will be looking forward to taking his chance.
Matt Westhoff (3 league - Central) - Matt has shown some signs of his best form in the Central District forward line. He’s really up beat and enthusiastic about where he is headed this year.
Matt Lobbe (2 league - West) - He’s been rucking well for some time now at SANFL level and he’s continued this through the pre-season. He continues to work on parts of his game that will help him at the next level. Looking forward to taking his opportunity in 2010.
Daniel Webb (3 league - West) - He’s had a quiet start to the year and is finding his feet at this level. Is starting to impose himself physically on the game and needs to make sure he has more of an impact at the contest and hold on to a few more marks
Michael Pettigrew (1 league - West) - Petters is coming back from an injury in the pre-season and he’s still getting up to speed. Enjoyed playing in the forward line for Westies as a bit of a change of position.
Wade Thompson (2 league - North) - Showed some signs of improvement until he suffered a fractured cheekbone. He's looking forward to his good form continuing when he gets back on the park.
Daniel Motlop (1 league - North) - Only played a half but showed some very good signs with his typical evasiveness and goal sense. Needed to get a bit of game time into his legs.
Marlon Motlop (2 league - North) - Marlon’s been the most outstanding Power player in the SANFL, looking very good in his two pre-season trial games. He’s worked hard for his touches and has bounced back well after an injury interrupted pre-season. He’ll be looking to build on that form as the season progresses.
Jarrad Redden (1 league/1 reserves - Eagles) - Jarrad just needs to keep improving. He’s got a lot of nice attributes, but needs to keep working on his effort around the ground.
Glenn Dawson (2 reserves - Eagles) - The Cougar’s progressing slowly after having glandular fever in the off-season. He managed two games in the Eagles’ reserves and will be looking to step his game up come round 1 of the SANFL season.
Matthew Broadbent (1 league - Eagles) - A solid contributor in his one game for the Eagles. He always gives 100 per cent and will continue to apply pressure to the AFL side. Will be given a chance at some point in 2010.
Cameron Cloke (2 league - Port) - Cam has shown some great signs at this level and has had a big impact for the Magpies in the ruck and around the ground. He’s already becoming a bit of a cult hero with the Magpies’ faithful.
Jackson Trengove (1 league game - Port) - Jacko’s continued to show his competitiveness at the contest and is now able to hold down a key position for the Magpies’ league team. He’s added some attacking flair to his game and will be pushing for Power selection.
Matt Thomas (1 league - Norwood) - Coming back from an ankle injury, he’s still getting back into the swing of things. He looks competitive and is able to have a real impact at SANFL level.
Tom Logan (2 league - Glenelg) - Tommy is solid at SANFL level. He always runs hard, has a great work rate and has a real impact for the Bays through the midfield and a bit up forward. He’s just waiting for his chance.
Josh Carr (3 league - Glenelg) - Coming back from injury he’s been able to improve his game each week. We’re yet to see his best, but it won’t be far away.
Danny Meyer (2 league - Glenelg) - A strong contributor across the half back line for the Bays. He gets plenty of the ball and uses it well - a quality player at SANFL level.
Jasper Pittard (2 league - Sturt) - Jasper’s settled in nicely to Sturt. He’s working on adjusting his game defensively to adapt to the SANFL style.
