PORT ADELAIDE will be hoping to add a second Brownlow Medallist to its ranks on Monday night with midfielder Zak Butters among the favourites for the prestigious award.
Ollie Wines is the only player from the club to have won the medal, polling a record-equalling 36 votes in 2021 to be crowned the AFL’s best and fairest player.
While Wines is the only Power player to have won the award, former captain Gavin Wanganeen does have one in his sock drawer dating back to 1993 when he was playing with Essendon.
Wines is second only to Travis Boak as the Port Adelaide player with the most Brownlow Medal votes, and the pair are the only players from Alberton to have polled more than 100 career votes.
Boak has racked up an incredible 174 Brownlow votes up until the end of 2022, while Wines has closed the gap and had 120 before this season.
Brayden Lyle received the club’s first Brownlow votes 23 years ago.
Then vice-captain Lyle received three votes for his 35 disposals and goal in a 33-point loss to Essendon in Round 2, 1997.
Lyle had returned to his boyhood club Port Adelaide after initially being drafted by West Coast.
After five Brownlow votes in 26 games with the Eagles, he added another 15 votes in 90 games for the Power.

Butters’ brilliant 2023 season has already been recognised with the AFLCA Champion Player of the Year award and the AFLPA Most Courageous player as voted by his peers, along with several other media awards. He is among the favourites for the Brownlow Medal, ranked by the bookies just behind Collingwood’s Nick Daicos and Western Bulldog Marcus Bontempelli.
