AT Port Adelaide we know that our work in China is all about bringing people together through sport, and for two of our supporters, that statement could not be more true

Meg Lowe and Alex Chu had wanted to get to Shanghai to watch the Power take on the Gold Coast in 2017 but could not get the time off work so this year they were organised and made sure they were there.

Having organised the trip well in advance, Alex then got to planning a special marriage proposal to coincide with the trip.

“Having left Adelaide on the Friday before Showdown 44, we were over the moon to see Port take a dramatic victory but gutted that we weren’t there to cheer the boys on,” Meg said.

“Naturally, the excitement bar had been set very high for the remainder of the holiday, but I think we surpassed it, even if Steven Motlop disagrees!

“Alex says that he had been planning to propose since about February, when he began scheming and purchased the ring.”

Alex waited until the couple was at the Jazz Bar at the Fairmont Peace Hotel to make his move.

“He proposed in the Jazz Bar while what is apparently Shanghai's most famous Jazz band was playing quietly in the background,” Meg said.

“It was a delightfully awkward moment that we’ll never forget - his palms still haven’t stopped sweating!

“Two days later, my family arrived in Shanghai and we had a fabulous time celebrating our engagement with our loved ones.

“Getting engaged was the highlight of the trip but seeing Port play in Shanghai was a close second.”

Meg is Port Adelaide born and bred and her great-great-grandfather Maurice Lowe played 77 games for the club and won the 1890 Premiership.

“My dad grew up right next to Alberton oval, often renting out the family’s front yard as car parking space for Magpie home games.

“Alex didn’t move to Australia until he was a teenager and even then, had never followed AFL - until we started dating, about 6 years ago, that is,” Meg said.

“He says that he learnt fairly quickly that a way to my heart - and a way to get dad’s approval - was to immerse himself in all things Port Adelaide.

“Now Alex claims to know more than me about the club - a hotly contested topic of discussion, especially when he yells “BALL” without knowing what that really means and when he gets mad every time I make us re-watch the 2004 Grand Final.”

The Port Adelaide Football Club congratulates Meg and Alex and wishes them a long and happy life together.

Can we suggest the Port Club as a potential wedding venue and Shanghai 2019 for the honeymoon?
