“The best pre-season we have ever had” seems to be an off-the-cuff remark that every AFL club likes to say at this time of the year.

We have said it ourselves, but the difference is we actually believe it.

If you were to base a good pre-season on the number of personal best times, the distance and time spent on the track, and the lack of injuries, then it has been one of our best.

Those close to me know that poetry is one of my hidden talents, so for my first edition of $how Me The Mahoney in 2007, here is our pre-season in a poem.

Port Adelaide 2007 Pre-Season
By Josh Mahoney

A trip to London started pre-season which was a bit strange,
We visited stadiums, soccer clubs, Lords, anything we could arrange.
Playing Aussie Rules on the Oval made us proud,
Watched by 15,000 screaming ex-pats in the crowd.

Whilst the trip was great, educational and loads of fun,
It was time to head back to Alberton, ready to run.
And run we all have, recording personal best times,
With a mixture of sprints, three-minute runs and hill climbs.

A couple of camps broke up the hard slog,
KI is nice, but not when you are carrying a log.
We went up and down sand dunes and were woken up during the night,
Throwing Arny off the ferry on the way back, just seemed to be right.

The draft was strong and we picked up a great crew,
All have settled in well after the customary first session spew.
Boak is smooth and really can play,
Another Gary Ablett Jnr they call Robbie Gray.
Rodan, what a find, loves to dodge and attack,
Stewart a local boy can play forward or back.
Krakouer is exciting and quick, showing great signs,
Williams off half-back shows courage and runs the lines.
Westhoff can take a grab and run like a machine,
Cockshell is big, strong and a little bit mean.
Our rookies will be ready to step up if a long term injury comes along,
Batsanis, Grose, Lee and Hardy have all shown AFL level is where they belong.

NAB Cup we saw more than one sign,
Beating the Crows we will take anytime.
A trip to Darwin, yes, usually sunny, humid and hot,
Not this time, I have never seen more rain fall in one spot.
We were drenched and tired, and ended with a draw,
Played extra time and lost by four.

Practice games have finished it’s time for Season 2007 to begin,
A year full of improvement, excitement and many a win.
We will be doing everything we can to make all our supporters proud,
So get to the games, wave your flags and scream out loud.

Go Power
