Each week the Form Guide will see SANFL senior coach Garry Hocking review the performances of the AFL-listed players in the Magpies League side. This week Buddha reflects on the performances of a number of in-form players pushing for limited places in the club's AFL team following a comprehensive victory over Central District in a trial game at Elizabeth.

SANFL Player of the week

Aaron Young

Young had a high possession game and mixed up his work on both the inside and outside of play. We were pleased with the way he ran and he provided a really good overhead marking option around the ground and also as a target up forward. He was certainly our best player on the day.

Power Player reviews

Mason Shaw
Mason started OK, but had little impact in the first two quarters and didn’t return after half time due to a wrist injury, which we are awaiting scans to assess the damage on.

Kane Mitchell

Kane’s work rate lifted after half time and he worked hard to outrun his opponents and win the uncontested ball pretty well. We’d like to see a bit more impact from him gaining more contested possessions going forward.

Ben Newton
Benny had a really solid performance on Saturday. Three clearances and good uncontested possessions outside of stoppages were his highlights on the day. I was also happy with his inside 50 work (5 inside 50s) and his defensive efforts which resulted in a few opposition turnovers.

Sam Gray
Sam wins plenty of the ball in and around the stoppages as well as uncontested possessions around the ground. He made the most of his limited time up forward to set up some scores, which was helpful in providing us with a few options.

Karl Amon
Karl had another solid performance and really attacked the ball. He’s a classy player who ran this game out particularly well. We’d like him to work on his disposal which missed the mark early in this match, but all in all, we like the way he plays and he shows us glimpses of the smart footballer we know he can be.

Jake Neade
Neadey played well in spurts and we can’t fault the way he tries to do everything we ask of him. He looked lively attacking for us early but undid some of his work through a couple of turnovers. His final quarter showed us some of his typical speed and desire to take the game on.

Brendon Ah Chee
‘Arch’ has improved his work rate in our last two games, but we’re still looking for consistent output over the full match. Consistency is the key for him and if he can take his good bursts of play where he hunts the ball well, then he can become a really important player for us. He kicked one goal off a really strong grab, which capped his day.

Tom Logan

You know what Tommy will give you and he had a really solid game playing on Central’s small forwards and as a spare man in defence. His disposal work was really good and he really plays the game on his terms. Very impressive.

Alipate Carlile
Bobby had the return he would’ve wanted by defending strongly over four quarters. He was only beaten on the leadup a couple of times and made up for that with some strong kicking out of defence and spoiling the ball emphatically - he looks good.

Sam Colquhoun
Sam played a solid four-quarter game, won lots of the ball and ran hard to get involved in the play. He did make a few errors but made up for it with the classy play we know he’s capable of. He reads the play well and uses that to receive the ball or create other opportunities around the ground.

Cam Hitchcock
Hitchy worked really hard all day and was one of our good uncontested players. He competed well which is what we like to see from him and tackled aggressively and played a good pressure game in attack. He needs to get more of this type of game time and performance into his body.

Brent Renouf
I’d describe this as a break-even game for Roofy. He kicked two goals up forward as a strong target which will be really good for his confidence. He's a bit like Hitchy in needing to get solid performances under his belt when you consider the setbacks he's had with injury.

Darcy Byrne-Jones
It was pleasing to see Darcy improve his aggression in the contests and with opportunities to lay tackles. He’s growing in confidence and so too is our confidence that he’s a capable and strong runner for our team. We saw his speed used well defensively a couple of times and he’ll be a very handy contributor for the team if he can translate this into his attacking game.

Cam O’Shea
Cam was his usual composed self down back and was rarely beaten. He’s close to recapturing his best defensive work and complemented his performance with some really good rebound off turnovers.
