LAUREN YOUNG, Sachi Syme and Olivia Levicki were among the Port Adelaide AFLW players starring for their respective SANFLW sides as the competition began at the weekend.
Young racked up 21 disposals and booted 1.2 as her West Adelaide side came from behind to win over South Adelaide with a goal after the siren to Emma Kilpatrick.
Young also recorded two tackles and three clearances in an impressive showing to start the season strongly.
Katelyn Pope proved a shining light for North Adelaide on an otherwise disappointing day against Glenelg for the Roosters.
Pope kicked her side’s only goal for the contest in the second term as the Roosters fell by 22 points.
She also had 19 disposals and four tackles in a typically industrious performance.
Amelie Borg had 13 disposals - all kicks – and three tackles for North.
For the Bays, Piper Window had 18 disposals, four clearances and four tackles in an enterprising showing while Ella Boag worked hard with seven disposals, two clearances and three tackles.
Neither Alex Ballard (Sturt) nor Shineah Goody (Woodville-West Torrens) featured as the Double Blues overran a 19-point half time deficit to the Eagles.
In the final game of the opening round, Central District overcame Norwood by two points at the Parade thanks in part to two goals to forward Julia Teakle. She finished with 2.1 from 11 disposals and took an equal team-high five marks.
Ruck Olivia Levicki was dominant with 48 hit-outs eclipsing by far the next best on the ground, her Bulldogs teammate Miyu Endersby who had 12. Levicki also had 14 disposals, three tackles and two clearances.
Sachi Syme was among the best for the Redlegs with 17 disposals. She also proved she was happy to get her hands dirty with a game-high seven clearances and seven tackles.
Port Adelaide’s AFLW players are currently in their off-season and a number have been released to play for SANFLW clubs for the opening five rounds of the SANFLW season before they return to Alberton officially in May for the start of pre-season.
