MILES BERGMAN said multiple players are knocking down the door for an AFL recall this week, ready to fill the gaps left through injury.

Port Adelaide could be forced into as many as four changes against Richmond, but Bergman is confident in the ability of those that could come in.

The 22-year-old spoke with the Adelaide media on Wednesday, touching on injured players, team depth and just how tight the competition is this season.

Bergman on replacing injured players this week
“Definitely, I think you just listed it right there. There's five or six names that are probably consistent AFL players along with plenty of others that have been playing really well the last few weeks. So there's definitely a big competition for spots at the moment.”

Bergman on Kane Farrell’s hamstring injury
“Yeah, definitely (disappointing for him to miss this week). He's been in some really good form and played really well on the weekend as well. But it’s just a little minor hamstring so we'll see how it goes with the week and he can build back up and feel good.

“He's a very explosive player and got some great weapons, like you said, but we like to pride ourself on our depth and we've got plenty of players that can fill roles. And I might move up the ground a little bit to take his spot. And then hopefully, we'll see what goes on.”

Bergman on playing a lockdown defence role
“I feel like it's more pressure. Probably a bit more nervous going into games. But it grows on me and I enjoy it now because we've got a good group around it. So yeah, but it'd be good to get a bit of a change up. I think probably because I'm not the biggest bloke compared to who I'm playing on (makes it challenging). Most of the forwards I play on have got five or 10 centimetres on me, so that makes me pretty nervous. But at the end of the day, just back myself in and they pick me for those roles for a reason.

“I don't know if there is like many tricks (on playing tall), it’s just using what you've got. For me, luckily, I’m pretty gifted with a good jump so I can get up to actually compete with him in the air and just sort of playing to what I know works for me.”

Bergman on Richmond
“You can't put anyone based on where they are on the ladder at the moment. We saw Richmond beat Sydney earlier in the year, so anything's possible. And we’ve just got to treat every game the same and come out hard.”

Bergman on the run home
“Yeah, it's very close range of, whatever it is, fourth to 12th or 13th. So anything can happen but we're really confident in what we've got going at the moment and obviously didn't have the best result on the weekend but we feel like we've got the right game plan and we're back to what we know we can do well.”

Bergman on Jeremy Finlayson’s injury
“He's been in and out of hospital a little bit, a few hiccups, but (he’s home now) and I had a good chat to him yesterday and seems to be pretty positive. So hopefully he's on the mend now and can come back. (Injuries to) organs is so different. And it's bigger than the game. Like, that's very serious. So just making sure we look after him and support him through that. And yeah, like I said, he's pretty positive at the moment, but we'll make sure that everything's all good and he has good time to rest up and rest with family.”

Bergman on Jason Horne-Francis
“Yeah, he obviously gets quite a bit more (scrutiny) than the regular player but he's learned to deal with it well and like you said he's growing a lot every week and every year. So we love the way he goes about it and he's a physical player, obviously, little slip ups that he's learning to control. So we’ve just got to support him through that and as the weeks go on, he'll learn every week. We love (the competitiveness he has) about him. And he brings that out of other players as well. So I think as Port Adelaide players, we sort of feel like that's part of us as well. So it's great to have him out there.”

Bergman on Todd Marshall’s availability
“Yeah there's always hope. I feel like a lot of players and a lot of times that comes down to last minute to see how they feel. We'd love to have him out there but he was pretty light today. We'll see how he pulls up and hope for the best.”

Bergman on housemate Will Lorenz making his AFL debut a few weeks ago
“He’s a bit more confident now he's made the big time! Nah he's been good. Always training hard and wanting to get the best out of himself. So hopefully he can get another look soon.”
