PORT ADELAIDE assistant coach Chad Cornes says the side has already turned its attention to Saturday night’s game against Melbourne following the weekend’s big win over the ladder leader Sydney.
The Power got the jump on the Swans at Adelaide Oval and finished 112 points in front, with the result seeing the side climb to third on the ladder.
Speaking during a press conference on Monday afternoon, Cornes said while the team celebrated appropriately on the night in honour of defender Aliir Aliir’s 150th game, the review had been completed and the side had now moved on.
Cornes also discussed the side’s form since the Round 15 loss to Brisbane, whether Todd Marshall could return from injury this week, and the crazy story behind the birth of his daughter Meadow last week.
Chad Cornes on whether he felt the side was going to win, as he did leading into the game against Geelong in Round 9:
“The result exceeded expectation, but there was again a very good feeling in the rooms. The confidence the boys got from the second half last week against Carlton was really evident during the week. The belief they took out of that and the feeling during the week pre-game was really upbeat and positive. I think it was (leading into) the Geelong game I said I had a feeling. We just knew we were going to win. It was similar, but I didn't expect to win by that much obviously.”
Chad Cornes on the way the side has responded since the disappointing loss to Brisbane six weeks ago:
“I think it's a credit to the players, to all the coaches, to everyone that works in the footy department. We didn't overreact to that Brisbane loss. We learned a lot from it, and I think the education that the coaches have been giving the players, the way the players are taking that on board and executing on game day has been outstanding. The analysts, I thought they always do a great job, but we were really prepared for how Sydney were going to play and the need to take away their corridor ball movement, and then the way the boys executed that out there was outstanding.
“Our connection on field during that Brisbane game was pretty poor, to be honest so that's been a real focus since, and the players have driven that, led by Connor (Rozee), and that's been really evident again in game, the way the boys are looking out for each other, celebrating the small things, simple things, like giving the ball to better positions inside 50, the shot selection stuff. It looked like a really, really connected team, I thought, on the weekend.”
Chad Cornes on how the side keeps its feet on the ground given the big win on Saturday night:
“We just had our review before. We spoke about the feeling in the rooms pregame, how we get that feeling again, acknowledgement of what we did well, but (it’s) pretty important to move on straightaway to Melbourne this week.
“Well, (for) Ken all year it's only really been a week to week focus. Anytime you lift your eyes too much further ahead of that, the competition can really bite you. We know one win can get you in the top four, one loss can get you out of the top eight, so it's always about the next training session, the next education session, then the next game.”
Chad Cornes on whether Todd Marshall could return from injury to the side this week:
“I think he firstly gets through training. I still believe Todd's in our best team when he's playing well, but it's hard to change that forward line in particular, guys like Frank Evans just coming in and playing a really important role for us. The three talls with Mitch (Georgiades) playing a bit further up the ground and obviously love what Esava (Ratugolea) has brought the last few weeks. If I had my decision, he'd be staying there for the short term at least. I've loved his contest, and Charlie (Dixon) back in great form as well. Having two really tall key forwards that can take contested marks and win battles has been a highlight for us.
“Todd’s still had some awareness of it on the weekend, so we'll see how he pulls up. But it'll be an interesting selection discussion later in the week.”
Chad Cornes on Charlie Dixon’s form and fitness in recent weeks:
“That time off, he had through suspension in the SANFL, he trained really hard, like it was a big training block for him. He lost the seven kilos. He looks in a lot better shape, and that’s obviously helped his movement around the ground. So, yeah, he dedicated himself really strongly during that period he had off.”
Chad Cornes on the side having another opportunity to play at the MCG:
“It’s always a special place to go. I say it every time I go there, it's got a great feeling about it. The boys already spoke about that today - you know, if you want to play big finals they’re at the G obviously, so performing well there late in the year could give you some belief if you were to push further and deeper into September. But it’s a great place to play against a big Melbourne club who we've had some great battles with over the last couple of years.”
Chad Cornes on the lead up to the arrival of his daughter while he was meant to be in Melbourne for the game against Carlton last week:
“It was a crazy day. I landed in Melbourne and Mikayla’s waters broke just as I landed so the club did a great job on getting me a flight straight out about an hour later. I got to the hospital in time, and she actually thought it came just as we hit the lead in the last quarter so it just felt like it was meant to be. It was good day.”
