PORT ADELAIDE AFLW senior coach Lauren Arnell has penned a one-year contract extension, keeping her at the club until at least the end of 2025.

As the inaugural coach of the AFLW side, Arnell has been integral in establishing the foundations of the women’s program at Alberton, which is about to enter its third season in the league.

Arnell’s rich and varied professional background made her the perfect candidate when she won the position in 2022 – she coached in the Brisbane Lions Academy, created and implemented the AFL’s ‘She Can Coach’ program, and spent a decade as a secondary school teacher.

A pioneer of women’s football, the 37-year-old was the first former AFLW player to be appointed as a senior coach, and last year, was the first senior coach to be pregnant while in the role.

Since arriving at Alberton, Arnell has forged important and genuine bonds with her coaches, players and support staff, allowing her to draw the best out of those around her.

Lauren Arnell will remain Port Adelaide's AFLW coach until at least the end of 2025.

She is excited for the opportunity to remain at Port Adelaide for another season.

“Port Adelaide showed faith in me when I was appointed senior coach of this football club and I couldn’t be more pleased to lock in another season here,” Arnell said.

“It’s been an absolute honour to be part of building this program from the ground up, and I’m so grateful for the experiences I’ve had so far.

“The club has been exceptionally supportive of my newest and most important role as a mum to my daughter Marlie, and I’m really proud to be continuing on at Port Adelaide.

“I’m very excited to watch the growth and evolution of our group this season and I’m looking forward to seeing what the next two years bring.”

Head of AFLW Shane Grimm is pleased to see Arnell remain in her role as senior coach.

“Lauren is a fantastic and passionate leader, who puts so much time, energy and care into our playing group,” Grimm said.

“Her knowledge and understanding of the game are real assets, and her ability to connect with people is what makes her a great coach.

“We are very pleased to have Lauren sign on for another year.”

Port Adelaide’s AFLW side will play a practice match this Sunday from 11am at Alberton Oval against Melbourne, with the season officially starting on August 31. This Sunday’s practice match is free to attend.
