PORT ADELAIDE's bid to have Dan Houston's ban reduced by the AFL appeal board has been unsuccessful.

Houston was cited by the Match Review Officer for rough conduct on Adelaide's Izak Rankine during the third quarter of Saturday's game. The incident was classified as careless conduct and severe impact with high contact.

Despite Port Adelaide presenting in its grounds for appeal that the tribunal 'erred in law' and the suspension was 'manifestly excessive', the appeal board reaffirmed the AFL tribunal's original decision, agreeing the appropriate sanction was five games.

Despite not being required to appear, Houston chose to attend the appeal hearing alongside the club's legal counsel on Thursday evening.

Houston will be ineligible for selection for the remainder of the 2024 season.
