KANE MITCHELL will play his first game for the 2014 AFL Season fresh from his upgrade from the rookie list.

He joins Alipate Carlile and Hamish Hartlett as the three inclusions into Port Adelaide’s team for Saturday’s clash with the Dockers at the Adelaide Oval.

Hartlett and Carlile was all but automatic selections in the side after suffering gastroenteritis in the lead up to last Saturday’s game against the Giants in Canberra.

Preview: Round 8

Paul Stewart and Ben Newton replaced them in the side for the Power’s first win in the nation’s capital and have been omitted from the Power lineup to play the Dockers.

The third omission is Tom Jonas, who suffered groin soreness after Round 7 and will be rested as a precaution this week.

Senior coach Ken Hinkley told portadelaidefc.com.au the inclusion of Carlile and Hartlett was a given once they had recovered from their illness.

“Clearly both Paul and Ben had a bit of luck to come into the side last week – they certainly played well – unfortunately for them the players they replaced were only ill and both Carlile and Hartlett were always going to come back into the team,” Hinkley said.

“We’ve got a healthy list, and healthy team, it’s a good problem to have.

“Tommy [Jonas] just battled last week with his groin and we’ve got to be mindful of the long season – as much as we want him out there this week, we just don’t want to take a risk, particularly with a bye next week which gives us another seven days to make sure he’s right.”

Jonas’s resting means Kane Mitchell will get the opportunity to try his hand at AFL for the first time this year after playing 13 games in his debut 2013 season.

Hinkley said Mitchell’s SANFL form with the Magpies warranted AFL selection, and credited the club’s newly integrated football program in allowing Mitchell the best chance to make an impact against the Dockers.

Gameday guide: Round 8

“What we’ve done all year with Sam Gray, Ben Newton and Paul Stewart is bring in players who’ve had 2-3 weeks where they’ve played strong, dominant football with the Magpies into the Power team,” Hinkley said.

“Now Kane has the chance to do the same. We know his run adds to the team.”

“These guys fit into the Power because of the systems they’re playing in the Magpies under Buddha.

“The system gives them the best chance to play well at AFL level, and while Newts and Stewy come out of the side, it’s only because of the quality of two other bloke who are available – not their ability to cut it in the AFL.

“Mitch will come into the team knowing its playing to the same system he’s used to – he just needs to step it up a gear.”

Maggies set for old rivals

The SANFL-leading Magpies will benefit from the inclusion of Ben Newton and Paul Stewart when they take on second-ranked Sturt at Alberton on Sunday afternoon in the league’s charity round.

Combined with the inclusion of Brendon Ah Chee and Darcy Byrne-Jones, the Magpies will be at their running best against the destructive Sturt forward line, despite of Kane Mitchell to the Power.

Zac Hawkins is the unlucky omission from the team after two good weeks on debut for the club in the SANFL.

He’ll bolster Jacob Surjan’s Academy side looking for its second win of the season against the Double Blues reserves at 11:25am on Sunday.

SANFL Preview: Round 6

SANFL senior coach Garry Hocking told portadelaidefc.com.au he was looking forward to the opportunity of playing Sturt for top spot on Sunday.

“We were delighted that Newts and Stewy were AFL-ready and had serviceable games last week, now they can come in for us and reacquaint themselves, they certainly strengthen us,” Hocking said.

“Sturt have got some very good players like Duldig and Coad and former Magpies like Kirkwood and Beard, so we’re going to need to be very good ourselves this week.”

Hocking also called on as many Port Adelaide supporters to get out to Alberton to see the top-of-the-table clash and support Ovarian Cancer awareness as part of Charity Round.

Port Adelaide supports Ovarian Cancer Australia

“It will be Mother’s Day on Sunday so we want every Magpie person to bring their mum along and show her a good game of footy,” Hocking said.

“We also getting on board with Ovarian Cancer Australia, so we want everyone at the ground to make sure they support the cause with a $2 teal ribbon.”
Port Adelaide hosts Sturt at Alberton Oval at 2:10pm on Sunday after the Academy game at 11:25am.
