RELIABLE defender Tom Clurey has been awarded the A.R. McLean Medal as Port Adelaide’s best and fairest player in the SANFL for 2024.
Clurey finished 17 votes clear of first-year midfielder Will Lorenz and 30 ahead of ruck Dante Visentini in the count held at the Adelaide Convention Centre on Friday night.
Clurey played all but one game for the Magpies in 2024, averaging 17 disposals, six marks and two tackles to claim his first A.R. McLean Medal.
It capped an outstanding season for the 30-year-old who provided valuable experience to coach Hamish Hartlett’s young side.
After receiving the award, Clurey paid tribute to his family, his partner and young daughter, and made special mention of Hartlett and his coaching staff.
“(Receiving this award) is a massive honour. It was definitely a tough year personally and also for the team,” he said.
“To all the coaches and all the Maggies staff, nobody actually sees all the work you put in.
“I just want to say a big thank you to everyone who helps out behind the scenes.”
Lorenz had an incredible debut campaign, playing 15 games and earning an AFL debut.
The 19-year-old averaged 21 disposals, four clearances and four tackles per game and booted seven goals.
Ruck Dante Visentini, forward-mid Cody Szust and utility Jake Weidemann rounded out the top five vote getters, with Weidemann awarded the Anthony Williams Memorial Trophy as the SANFL contracted player of the year.
Long-time volunteer Chris Glacken was awarded the Bob Clayton Memorial Award recognising him for his loyal service to the club’s operations and for demonstrating Bob Clayton’s qualities of being positive, honest, trustworthy, loyal and committed.
